Gear shift in 07 Dodge Caravan doesn't go cleanly into gears and will settle in reverse gear causing the car to not be able to be started or to lock the key in

Check the gear shift linkage next to the transmission. It may be loose.

Maybe something wrong with neutral switch? Usually it is on or close to transaxle shift lever, follow the shift cable to shift lever, the switch has multiple wire connector.
It may be possible to start vehicle by jumping the load side of starter relay, key on. There are safety issues trying this, the vehicle will crank in any gear. Make sure tranny is out of gear, parking brake is set, block the wheels, whatever it takes to be safe, safety is your responsibility.
If the problem isn't that neutral switch, then I don't know? Any applicable trouble codes?

It can be issue with gears or problem with transmission and needs to be rebuilt. Also get the ****** fluid checked. If it's low, then such problems occurs.

The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

Check your brake lights, if the system doesn't get a brake lights on signal it will not release park, it is called the park lock system.

It is more then likely either a solenoid or a clutch pack. If you hear a bump and then nothing when you shift, it is probably the clutch pack, if nothing happens, it is more then likely the solenoid. The bad news, it will require a rebuild either way. Reverse gears are some of the hardest to change, and especially on that transmission, it will be quite a process to repair.

Sounds like the shifter linkage needs adjusted. There is a neutral saftey switch that prevents the car from being started in any foward or reverse gear. If the shifter linkage is out of adjustment, the neutral safety switch will give you starting problems.
