My automatic gear shift will not engage. It easily moves up and down but doesn't engage. 2001 ford escape. Drove fine last night but today, it won't go into gear.
The end of the shifter cable is plastic, and it snaps onto the transaxle linkage which is metal. Over time, the plastic fatigues and it pops off. I repaired mine with 2 interlocking steel zip ties and it worked well for years with no further problems. The end of the shifter cable is plastic, and it snaps onto the transaxle linkage which is metal. It could be the clutch or transmission. Having a transmission rebuilt can be more cost effective than a whole new one. You will have to check out what's available to you and consult your budget for the repair.
A detent is a notch or notches in a part used to keep a shifter (in this case) at a certain position. Be that an automatic or stick-shift. You can imply that the shift pattern on a stick-shift has detents for each gear as the shift lever locks and slides in and out of each position for that gear to work when the clutch is released. The detents on an automatic can resemble "steps" which engage a different gear or series of gears(drive) when a certain step is locked into position by a pressure bar or pressure lever.
Sometimes the pressure bar or pressure lever is spring loaded and your hand works against that tension to select a gear or function(drive). There may be an adjustment for the spring tension, or the spring is too weak and the shift assembly must be replaced.
With electronic shift solenoids, some of the shift assembly is different than with the old-style mechanical shifter. The action may be fly by wire with electronic shifts.
I do not know what you have, so there may be differences.
If the shift handle moves extremely freely (more than normal), changes are that the shift cable has become disconnected from the shift lever. This would explain the indicator not moving out of neutral.
You will need to access the shift lever by removing the console cover. Once you access the shifter check the cable connection to the level. If the cable is broken, it will need replacement. If the cable clip has broken or fallen off, it will need to be reattached.
EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. If the EGR valve exploded, then there is most likely a restriction in the system. You may need to remove the valve and look for a build up of carbon or burnt oil. the process may get time consuming as you may need to disassemble parts of the engine.
the gears in transmission are going out..aka slipping.....check out pavementpounders.com or gotmud.com they cn help you out better on there than on here
