With engine off, have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth. Check under the hood along the steering shaft for loose u-joints. check the steering box, check joints at either end of drag link(from steering box down to passenter wheel) and tie rod ends. do this with engine off so wheels dont turn. and by the way, jeeps have sloppy steering boxes from the factory, so don't expect excellent, tight steering when you're done. good luck

My key will not turn in the ignition in my rx400h, 2006

Sometimes when the car is parked with the wheels turned to one side, it puts pressure on the key.
Try turning the steering wheel a little more each way, while turning the key, to release the pressure.
Hope this helps.

2004 Toyota highlander steering wheel is locked but turned halfway, key wont turn and wheels are straight

there is a load on the lock pin in the steering column try turning the steering wheel a bit left or right to release the pin as you try turning the key.
Steering wheel locks never lock straight ahead as the idea is that if the car is being stolen it will turn a circle rather that move straight

Steering wheel locked up

Just a question that might help.
Are the wheels straight or turned at a hard angle? If the wheels are angled turn the steering wheel in the same direction and then try to turn the key with pressure still on the steering wheel. You have to take the pressure off the stop to have the key cylinder turn.
If the wheels are straight have you tried a different key?

When putting my '04 Mountaineer in reverse or drive, with the steering wheel turned, the car fights very hard to move. Driving straight if fine. Any ideas?

Hello, Yes, It sounds like it is in 4 Wheel drive mode. Your vehicle will not make as sharp of a turn when in 4x4. You should be in 2 wheel drive on dry pavement. If you have the other system called All Wheel Drive, yours would be binding when it should not.

Check your Range Selector for the different settings. When in 4x4, the vehicle is made to take gradual turns so you don't flip it on a hill. Sometimes people mistake the Range knob for the Fan Blower switch.

a bad idler arm/pitman arm, You will have a hard time trying to keep the car going straight, it will wander all over the road.
  1. Road walking. When the vehicle wanders back and forth in the direction of travel and it is difficult to keep it straight.
  2. When sitting still, there is considerable play in the steering wheel. It can be moved considerably with no resistance.
  3. When sitting still, and with the front wheels off the ground, it is possible to move the wheels side to side without the steering wheel moving. If there is to much play in the steering wheel or side to side movement of the wheel when the vehicle is stopped could indicate there is a problem with the idler arm.

Turn the wheel slightly towards the direction you last turned it in and hold it there. This will remove the friction against the key lock, allowing you to turn the key and unlock the steering coulomb.

The steering coulomb lock is a safety feature that keeps criminals from driving off with your car in the event that they hotwire it. It locks the wheel slightly to the left or right, so they will only go in circles.
