I need to replace the starter on my 1988 subaru gl wagon non turbo five speed and I have no idea where its located.

It will be close to the gearbox bell housing, where it connects to the engine. If I remember correctly (it's been a while) it's on the left side of the engine.

Subaru GL

How many miles on your subie? Is it fuel injected? I think Subes still had a few carbureted models even up to about 1988.
Check the timing, and if it's injected have the fuel pressure checked for proper pressure.
After it starts, does it run good? Might want to checlk your vacuum hoses for any leaks.
Good luck.

I have no power to the fuel pump , n when i remove the fuelpump relay n use a jumper wire i still have no power at the fuel pump on a 1988 subaru gl wagon 1.8 liter fuel injected

I would suspect that the Fuse has blown, or the wire has been cut? to that supply wire to the pump, try running a lead directly back to the Positive of the battery and see if that works OK? If so locate and replace the fuse, and or fix the broken wire.

My 1988 subaru gl has a timeing problome need marks

In the back of the engine you will find a rubber plug that covers a hole in the bell housing. Remove the plug and on the flywheel there are timing marks. you have to turn the engine over clock wise untill you see them. There are 3 lines, line up the middle line with the pointer, put the left cam shaft sprocket mark straight down and the right cam sprocket mark straight up, and install the belts.

1988 Subaru GL Fuel Issues - runs lean - low power on upgrade

Will it rev up in neutral? Kinda sounds like your spark advance isn't working as it has fuel and spark and runs, albeit not well. It would be helpful if you included mileage on the car and a description of the conditions when this started to occur.
