Is a ball bearing the same as a wheel bearing hub assy , I took my 2001 Dodge Dakota to a repair shop he replaced the front wheel bearing hub assy, when I took my truck home it started making a popping sound from the driver side front. I took it back now he says its the ball bearings and its gonna cost another $500.00 ????? So can that be true ???

????? This vehicle should be equiped with tapered roller bearings. Ball bearinga are out dated and not used since the 60's. No on the hub assembly, The brgs go into the hub and are replaceable as a seperate part.. $ 500.00? This is a mechanic? Do this, jack up the front end of the vehicle and rotate the wheel to determine if there is a proble. Not ant rough or hanging up of ythe wheel while turning it. Then put one hannd on the top and one on the bottom and push and pull. You are now checking for loose bbearings. Any looseness or roughness is a call to have the wheel and hubs pulled and inspected. 500.00? He is trying to get rid of you by quoting an outrages price. If you accept the estimate he is all the more happier for ripping you off. Take it to another shop and say no more than " Please chk the front end and wheel brgs. DSay no more than that and leaave them to their work. They will call you when they need you. Ask for the old parts if you have them replace or repair.. My estimate. 20 to 30.00 in parts and shop time 1.5 hrs. A reputable shop will show you where, why, and how.the process works..

You probably mean ball joint. If if it is indeed ball BEARING then he is trying to get you and you should beware. The hub-bearing assembly and the ball bearing is the same thing

How do I replace a front wheel bearing?

front wheel bearing is pressed into hub and has retaining clip on rear and then cv axle shaft comes through center and has a nut and keeper pin. Rule of thumb is to replace both front wheel bearings at same time. raise front of vehicle place on jackstands for safety remove front wheels remove brake calipers remove front rotors and cv axles remove steering hub assy from lower ball joint, tie rod end and struts take hub to shop and have bearing pressed out have new bearings pressed in reassemble front wheels in reverse order of disassembly.

On my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2 2WD, I just found

This is a very simple job to do. Raise the front of truck off the ground, block the rear tires. Using pliers and a hammer, remove the grease cap from hub. Remove the cotter key and nut from axle, pull out slowly and remove outer bearing. then remove hub from axle. To remove inner bearing ,prop hub on a board and use a large punch to drive out bearing and seal. Clean out inside the hub and install new bearing and seal. Replace all parts in the reverse as you took them off. Hope this will help you.

Noise in front wheels of 97 dodge dakota

this is at least one bad wheel bearing, the bearing that is bad will be on the side of the direction you steer that lessens the noise.

Clicking noise coming from front right tire on a '01 Dodge Ram

as long as your sure its comeing from the front right tire proceed
to get to the bearing you have to take the wheel off first, rotate the rotor to see if you can hear the bearing.
remove wheel remove brakes/caliper/caliper bracket/rotor remove cotter pin/axle nut remove 4 bolts from wheel bearing assy unplug electrical connector for ABS, if has it tap axle end lightly to dislodge fron wheel bearing assy may need pry bar and hammer or air chisel to remove wheel bearing assy from vehicle clean orifice well and installation is the opposite to inspect the bearings take it out , and look for loose or stuck bearings, if it rolls freely chances are its not bad. . if water or dirt gets inside it can ruin the bearing. make sure you pack the bearing with grease. if the bearing is bad just buy a new one. i cant guarantee it is a bearing so good luck.

Replacing A wheel bearing

hi from the uk seriously the best advice i will give you having done these is remove wheel then with foot brake applied? remove the drive shaft securing nut(cv joint ) tap the joint back ? then remove b/caliper assy then diconnect track rod steering end then remove the bolt and nut that secures the lower ball swivel joint (you may find this stiff but percevier try a lever bar and press suspension lower arm down ) then two bolts and nuts secure hub assy to strut ? remove these and you can pull complete assy off drive cv shaft now you are best to take the hub assy complete with rotor/disc to a local engineer shop or garage that has a press or bearing puller hydraulic press is best option ? and ask if they could remove the old bearing and fit new for a small fee ? believe me these bearings can be a cow and if you want a quick turnround? this is best way rather than potential damage by trying to hammer bearing races out ? just a little more advice clean up/wash off assy before you take it to shop it will be more helpfull to mechanic to work on be sure you renew the cv hub nut and re torque after reassembly hope these instructions help you ? best wishes

How do I replace the driver front wheel bearing on a 2001 dakota

If it is 4X4 you will need to remove your hub assembly. Then If, 2 wheel drive you will need to remove your brake assembly. The dust cover to get access to axle nut. Remove the cotter pin, then the nut. Be careful of the ABS connection on the back of your hub. Replace bearings, races and the seal. Let me know if you need to know how to load your bearings and I’ll go into more detail.
