There are two engine possibilities on a '96 model: a 4.0L v6 160hp or a 4.9L V8 210hp and either a 4-speed auto with overdrive or 5-sp manual. Both transmissions were available with either engine. There were no diesel options on the '96.
What's fitted depends on which exact model he has.
But it's obvious to him whether he has an auto or manual shift and if it doesn't say V8 or V6 on the engine then just count the spark plug wires: V8 will have eight of them (nine if you include the coil wire) and the V6 has six (or seven, as before). A picture of the V6 engine is at http://img74.imageshack.us/i/xpic2sn4.jpg/#q=1996%20Ford%20Explorer
Hope this has helped. If so please return the favour and rate my answer, and if you actually meant what are the physical dimensions of the engine and transmission then let me know which engine and which 'box and I'll come back to you.
The 8th vin digit is the engine size. but in 96 they only had 2 V6 is 4.0L....., V8 is 5.0L
