Should the battery charger be connected directly

Not sure what you mean by 'the register'. That is an old fashioned name for a heater radiator? Do you mean something to do with the heating system, like vents of blend door actuators that control heat and cold direction?

or a window regulator.

alt died
then in 30min driving the battery dies and engine stops
the engine run off the ALT full time until the ALT dies
causing rapid battery discharge. and engine stalls.

do not replace the alternator with battery NEG lug connected of blow up ALT FUSES, never fun that.
or on newer smarter alts , it shuts down if 1 battery cell of 6 goes open or shorts, this prevents battery explosion.
so we load test the battery first. then if good the alt is bad. or we test the alt next.
this failure is super common , for 100 years.
we test the both carefully

the alt good will put 13v to 15vdc on the 2 battery lugs.
even at idle, and any dmm meter made can see that.

Dead Battery! Bad alternator. Check both with voltmeter.

check your battery connections and fuse link in the red battery cable

You do not need to remove the battery to charge the battery. When you connect the charger you MUST be careful to connect the charger's positive lead to the positive terminal to the battery and the negative lead to the negative lead to the battery before you turn on the battery charger. Connecting the charger leads the wrong way around most likely damage the vehicle's electronics.
When you finish charging the battery turn off the charger before you disconnect the charger leads. This will prevent arcing between the leads and the battery.

How is the charging system doing?...if the alternator is ok check for a bad ground at your battery. If thats ok, then the switch or the circuit board is the problem. GM had a big recall that included over 833,000 vehicles...all suvs. Yours may be included. If it is and the recall has not be done, your dealer will do it at no charge.

Buy a Haynes manual for the vehicle ( most auto stores carry them). With this manual you can do nearly any repair on the vehicle, they give you step by step directions.

Your system is computer and hold the a/c switch and the switch to the left at the same time and it will recalibrate it self and the doors will work right, Hope this helps you
