Either the lock cylinder came apart in the housing, which if it did you will need a new cylinder/key/housing and program the housing and build the lock cylinder(take to deal)or the ignition switch went bad (electrical part on end of lock cylinder) bith are common ion issue. i would take to the shop, they should have all those parts in stock

SOURCE: 2006 Ion 2, Key is stuck in the ignition and wont move.

In my case, out in 29 palms california, I've noticed heat expands the bolt which probably does the same to the tumblers. It would only happen in the afternoons when the steering column was in direct sunlight while I was inside working for hours. Everything would be fine, then when I left and got to home or destination, the bolt would not return home to shut off the car. I saw a suggestion in another website that said if you remove a small access door below the wheel, there is a plunger you can hold and set it back to home, but hello, the bolt and tumblers at this point have expanded from the heat to a position not resettable but a simple plunger, or resetting the cars computer for an electronic release (the initial problem is the cable down there with the plunger does not always send the signal that "I am in park." It thinks its still in Drive, so it won't let it return home.

My suggestion is to get one of those canned air for electronics, flip it upside down and freeze down the bolt, tumblers, and all metal involved in the problem here (you can see most of it once you remove the upper and lower parts of the steering column) and let the metal retract, hopefully letting you move it back to home (careful, dont snap the key). Grease the key with a small amount of motor oil to help (which you should do from time to time anyways with this vehicle).

If you are stuck and can't do that, or afford repairs at this moment, behind the wheel, below the ignition (you will be reaching back mostly behind, and there is a small plastic clip with colored wires that snap into place). Remove this when you want the car to turn "off." Removing this cable and letting it just hang there until you come back later will remove all electrical potential that is normally removed when you turn the key all the way home. It's annoying, and looks like you are hotwiring your car, but its working for me right now until I can fix it. This, is of course, assuming you are like me and the bolt is stuck fully forward, one click back from Start).

I have a 2006 Saturn Ion and the Ignition Key is stuck in the ON position and the Engine will not STOP! My garage said to pop the hood and unplug the Fuel Pump fuse first, then remove the Positive Lead...

First try to spay a liberal amount of PB Blaster into the switch around the key to free up jammed tumblers in order to release the ignition switch and allow the key to be removed. ANY ATTEMPT TO JURY RIG THE WIRING WILL RESULT IN TRIGGERING THE ANTI-THEFT FUNCTION OF THE ECU AND DISABLE THE VEHICLE. Simply disconnect the ground cable from the battery to shut off all power to the vehicle.

I have a 2007 saturn ion, the battery is dead do to forgetting to shut the headlights off, now the key is stuck in the ignition and no way to open the trunk to get to the battery. Is there anyway to the...

Well, the first answer is right but doesn't solve the problem and the second answer is wrong as the battery is in the trunk.

Just had the exact same problem. Battery dead on 2005 ion due to head lights left on which causes the key to stick in ignition.

Could not get to the battery in trunk because key stuck and power trunk switch also dead (no battery power, catch 22).

Solution: I hooked up a battery charger to the positive terminal under the hood by the fuse box and the negative to the engine block and charged it for 20 minutes. You could also jump it using the same terminals.

Key stuck in ignition had to unhook battery to kill trunk shut can't get in trunk to open and hook battery back up

the ignition lock cylinder exploded in the housing and thats why the key is stuck, there is a little square panel under the steering column pop that off and push on the white knob and that will let the key turn and hopefully come out,,and then all ok,but you still need a new switch

2006 Saturn Ion 2 - Key stuck in ignition and will not turn off.

1) the NHTSA will do nothing as its not a safety issue, as a lock cylnder can never lock up a steering wheel while in the run position..it is impossible.
2) most times it not a quality problem with the lock cylnder but that people have too many keys and things on their key ring and that weight ruins the lock cylnder
