I have a 1990 Subaru Legacy, 2 litre, model BF5B44E. I select drive and the car revs but will not move. If I select 1st or 2nd, no problem, it moves but will not go into 3rd or drive when I try to up shift manually.. How do I fix it?
Well in a auto gear box you have in the pan on g/box a filter and a forward oil pump and a reverse pump also a set of bands forward and a reverse plus a valve body assy which has a load of small pistons and springs and oil ways ,but by the sound of your problem is that the forward pump isent going through the body valve for some reason so its taking a short cut and bypassing 1,2,3, and trying to to top first.
So sorry to tell you that the answer to your problem is you have to go to a Auto Matic gearbox shop and they will have to fix it ORget a second hand box and fit it yourself.
Let me know how you go. are you on Skype Ron
GOOD glad to see you got a s/box etc But make sure that when you get the s/h/box assy that the torque converter it stays fitted to the gearbox do not take it off and put it on later as you will loose oil but it can be a bugger to refit .
Just in case when fitting the converter it has 2 lots of splines in it 1 locks in outer splines and the other does the driving so DONT damage the oil seal on gear box ..and then fit converter and turn about 20 times sometimes to locate the second set of splines
then fit the box as a assy (all in one unit).
Happydays Ron
Yes you have to unbolt it BUTyou should have got the converter when you got the g/box assy and in that way you wouldent have lossed any oil and you wouldent have to use your,s as you dont realy no weather the converter was some of the problem in the first place on ,,But lets hope its ok but yes take it off and fit to the splines on the box but dont forget to put it on and turn a few times and push it in slightly at the same time and keep it straight when turning and then it has to go on the second lot of splines,, the converter has to be flush with the bellhousing before refitting ,,and when you fill the box with auto trans fluid oil ..Start Run for 30 seconds and stop and top up oil Run again 1 minute on idle and with foot brake on select 1st gear then2nd then stop ,,stand for 2 minutes and check oil recheck bolts and if all ok start TEST RUN AND then you will be a happy chappy ...
And have a goodday . Ron
GOOD on ya you have done well so now we can use you as a Guru..

Thank you Ron. I have found a gearbox and drive train to fit. I am told the drive train might be necessary as the gearbox comes our of a later model vehicle.
I am not on Skype.
cheers

Well Ron, The gearbox had been removed without the torque converter. Lots of oil poured out, we assume it came from the torque converter. Or maybe from the gearbox.
Like you said a bugger to refit. Do I need to fill the torque converter with oil or is that process done when filling the gearbox?
You say to fit as one assembly, does that require unbolting the torque converter from the engine?
cheers

Hi Ron
Mission completed. Put 2nd hand box in and the car ran for a wee while then started making all sorts of horrible noise. I then replaced the rear diff. My original was 4.111 ratio and the next 4.444. Once I had done that the car seems to be going ok.
Thanks for your help
Rex
