Some thing you could look at would be this. The control is usually fed by a vacuum line or small hose thats is connected to your intake manifold.
With a cold engine, look for a skinny vacuum hose that runs from the intake toward the fire wall . It should be going inside the cab and connecting to the A/C vent control. Some times the hose becomes disconnected or splits or cracks due to heat under the hood.
Thats usually the trouble.
I hope this helps you.

When I turn my vent selector to defrost on the far right (air con off)the air conditioning comes on. The dash vents will blow ambient air, but defrost setting blows air con. Any ideas?

It's normal for the A/C compressor to come on with the defroster to dehumidify the air so the windsheild won't fog up under humid conditions. You can still control the air temp. out the vents with the temp. select switch.

Air conditioning will not come out front dash blowers

Check the plenum door motors (vacuum controllers). When you move control you should see each of them move. the one that does not respond is the one that isn't working. Check hose that feeds it as well if no vacuum there switch control is bad.)

Air conditioning blows out of the defrost vents only

If this is the mechanical unit it is possible that the wire in the back has come adrift or the clip that holds the wire in position has come off and now the whole cable is moving.
Have a look at the bottom of the dash where the controls are fitted and move the control at the same time looking if there is any movement below the dash, take it from there
