There should be a flap under the steering wheel that can be opened with a flat head screw driver. Once open you will find a button that when pressed releases the key. This may get it unstuck. You can stall the car to kill the engine if this does not work. After doing this disconnect the battery so it will have enough juice to start and take you to the dealer.

The ignition went bad in my 2006 Saturn Ion a couple of years ago. Luckily I have the manual transmission so I choked the engine to stop it. I called my local Saturn dealership and was advised the the ignitions are going bad on them, but not enough have been reported for them to actually recall the part. I ended up having to have the entire ignition replaced and rekeyed to match my original key. I do suggest taking it to a GM dealership to do it, the mechanic I took mine to spent 3 days alone trying to program the new ignition into the car, and killed my battery numerous times in the process. Hope this helps. :)

2006 ION, 2.4, manual trans, 101,000 miles. Never had any problems until arriving home today. Ignition key will not turn to off and cannot be removed. Only way to stop engine is to set the brake, start in...

sounds like a bad key switch. the key needs to go in start car then turn off and be removed. you say the key cannot be removed. Is the key still in there? if so you need a new key lock drum. and/or a new ignition switch behind the actual key lock.the key lock can be removed and the electric switch is down in there. once the key lock is out you can start with a screwdriver. the mew key lock will come with a new key and snaps right in. to remove the old key lock refer to a manual for procedure.

the ignition swotch on the end of the lock cylinder inside the bottom of the steering column there is a connector that goes to it,,replacde that switch and relearn the switch,,,,after you replace the switchtry to start the car then let the key go back to the run position and let it sit for 10 minutes do this 3 times with 30 seconds between key starts and on the last one wait 2 minutes when done and they try to start it,,,,so its 3 10 minutes learns with 30 seconds inbetween,,

Key stuck in ignition had to unhook battery to kill trunk shut can't get in trunk to open and hook battery back up

the ignition lock cylinder exploded in the housing and thats why the key is stuck, there is a little square panel under the steering column pop that off and push on the white knob and that will let the key turn and hopefully come out,,and then all ok,but you still need a new switch

2006 Saturn Ion 2 - Key stuck in ignition and will not turn off.

1) the NHTSA will do nothing as its not a safety issue, as a lock cylnder can never lock up a steering wheel while in the run position..it is impossible.
2) most times it not a quality problem with the lock cylnder but that people have too many keys and things on their key ring and that weight ruins the lock cylnder
