I drove my 2003 Saturn VUE off the lot, brand new, and have had minor problems from the start. I now have 137k miles on my VUE and have been tolerating the noises the entire time.
Most troubling: my VUE's steering column now squeals and grinds when I turn. Especially at low speeds and when parking, the wheel is difficult to turn and makes a loud noise - coming from the steering column inside the car.
Saturn VUE's do not use power steering fluid - the PS system is elecrtical, with the unit located near the drivers knees. What does the squealing and grinding indicate? Will this turn into a serious safety issue? Any Saturn experts out there who are familiar with this problem?
I am a saturn tech and ive never heard of this concern, the columns do go bad but they just set a ses light and cut out power, the column could be bad,it could also be the intermediate shaft u joint binding,,,i rec take to dealer, could be serious
well there were some issue where the rubber boot at the floor where the cloumn goes thru would get dry and squeak and chatter ,,you pulled up the boot lubed it and put it back in place and it was ok,,,,the only other issues i have seen required complete column replacements and i bet thats what you need,,,i dont know how loud or exactly where your noise is comming from so its hard to say but thats the typical issues

My '03 VUE is 4 cylinder, FWD, manual transmission.
The only local Saturn service dept wants $65 just to step foot out of the garage and listen to my squealing steering wheel, which is now loud enough for others to hear from outside my VUE. Instead, I circled the lot, turning and cranking the wheel so that potential new Saturn customers could hear what their future sounds like should they purchase a new VUE. Unfortunately they couldn't also hear the many rattles and creaks that have persisted from the first week I drove my VUE off the lot back in 2005. This steering column noise is the icing on my turd cake - every time I park my VUE, people stop and stare in horror, thinking I am strangling a Canadian goose. This goes over great at the office where I work - leaves a real professional impression on my coworkers.
Here is my good deed for the day: do NOT buy a Saturn. You can thank me later.
Correction above - I drove my VUE off the lot brand new in June 2003.
I have a saturn vue when I turn my key to run it starts and the starter stays engaged Put it in gear and the starter disengages but try to put it back in park and it grinds really bad like the starter is still engaged I have replaced the switch with another used switch
