Proper operating temperature on 2004 Jeep Wrangler, Unlimited

  • dbroccoli Sep 28, 2009

I installed a plow and was testing it this week when the temp guage went to the "danger" zone. I wanted to see if my normal operating temperature "210", was proper for the jeep. Apparently it is. After searching, I'm beginning to read that the plow is restricting/blocking air flow to the radiator. I'm searching now for possible solutions. Thanks for your reply...

The thermostat controls operating temperature. This occurs at a preset temperature (typically 195 degrees F. or so), which is usually stamped on the thermostat itself. The thermostat should be fully open about 20 degrees F. above the rated temperature. So your operating temperature is about right. If you have doubts, just replace the thermostat with a new one of the correct temp.

SOURCE: 2004 Jeep wrangler 4.0 - 6cyl overheating

Yes, for the price of a thermostat and the real possibility of getting a faulty one (that won't open or won't open fully) out of the box, I'd try another one...

If it still overheats, the water pump might be a probable culprit. It might not be sending enough water flow to cool the engine. Even with the thermostat fully open, it still restricts the water flow compared to no thermostat at all... When you take it out, it might flow enough that the engine does not overheat anymore.

SOURCE: removing seats at the back of my Jeep wrangler

Hi Roger,

It's done from behind the vehicle.

Open the gate. At the base of the seat, there is a horizontal bar that releases the rear seat latches. Pull it up while pushing the seat forward.

When it's at an angle you can manage, Pull it up and out the tailgate. Not a bolt in site

Best regards
Mike
