If it's a heater core hose, it shouldn't be too hard to find where it should go. Remember, the hose is only so long, so it's got to be within that length of hose. Go slow with a flashlight and, holding the hose in one hand, kinda move it around it full length to see where it might have been.
the smoke came from the spilled oil leaking onto a hot surface ( manifold) No problem there. The oil light coming on was probably from the oil surging away from the oil pickup in the sump momentarily allowed the oil pump to suck air hence a drop in oil pressure. To have all that happen, the hit on the curd was substantial. so I thinking bent axle flange and broken engine mounts could explain vibrations and engine shaking
If you have recently had your oil changed,the oil filter may be loose or cross threaded.Also if you have had an oil change recently it could just be spilled oil. Make sure your oil filler cap is on tight and the dipstick is on tight. While you are at it check to see how much oil you have actually lost.If it`s not coming from the engine,i would inspect the oil pan gasket and the oil pan itself may have a hole in it.
I had this problem with my passat... the valve cover gasket is slightly leaking. If you take the big plastic piece off the top of the motor (4 plastic fake screws you just have to twist) you can see along the edge of the valve cover if there is oil or not. Mine wasn't bad, but was doing the same thing you describe. Here is a write up on how to do it... really easy (http://www.taligentx.com/passat/maintenance/valvecovergasket/) or you can get a Chilton manual which will show you how to do lots of things yourself, usually $30-$40 for the book.
Here is the problem, the gasket is all you need as long as there are no holes in the pan, sometimes they hit things besides raccoons and dent the pan, you can get a gasket no problem, here's the problem, not all pans slide out for you to work on without lifting up the engine about 6 inches, there is an oil pump that sumps down in the bottom of that pan, and you can't get the pan out without hitting it especially when there is a motor mount, cross member in the way. You might be able to get the pan down about 2 inches, get the gasket cleaned off without spilling too much **** inside the sump, then stretch the new gasket around the outside of the pan and get it in place, use no adhesive, no silicone, nothing, dry.
