According to the factory service manual, you should drop the tank, there are pictures and diagrams with these in the manual.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Drain the fuel tank. .
  4. Remove the fuel tank.
  5. Remove the fuel sender assembly.
  6. Note the position of the fuel strainer (2) on the fuel sender.
  7. Support the fuel sender assembly with one hand and grasp the strainer (2) with the other hand.
  8. Pull the strainer off the fuel sender. Discard the strainer after inspection.
  9. Inspect the strainer. Replace a contaminated strainer and clean the fuel tank.
  10. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector (5).
  11. Remove the electrical connector retaining clip (6) from the fuel level sensor.
  12. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector (7) from under the fuel sender cover.
  13. Remove the fuel level sensor retaining clip (4).
  14. Squeeze the locking tangs and remove the fuel level sensor (3).
  15. Remove the fuel pressure sensor (1).
A good place to get an inexpensive service manual is from Promanuals it's a complete factory manual.

If you have help its easier and faster to take bed off

  • swinada Apr 09, 2011

For sure way easier to lift the box then to drop the tank. If I remember correctly there is only 4 bolts on each side, take them out than just lift the box on the drivers side, tilt it and support with a few 4x4's or what ever you have laying around. Make sure you prop it up with more thn one thing so if one slips you still got some more to hold it up. Its best to do this with some help but it can be accomplished by one person, I know i've did it a few times and it looks like i'm goinfg to do it again as my fuel pump again will not work. This is pump number 4 for this 2000 GMC and I only have 140'000 km's on it.

before all that do a pressure test and see if the pump is working..
the tank has to be drained and removed.i would not cut a hole in the box.
disconnect the battery, and ground the pump assembly if you are worried about static.

SOURCE: Is there an easy way to check a fuel pump without dropping tank?

perform a presure test at the engine, but there are two pumps on this models, one low pressyre pump in the tank and a high pressure one mounted on the vehicle frame that is the one that go bad more often,so its not a pain to replace, also you can perform a volume test(this one all you need to do is unhook the line to the fuel rail and place the line in a container,at idle it should pump about a pint in 20 seconds.for the pressure test you need a presure gauge the pressure should be between 40 to 50 pounds and hold it for about 10 min.

I am replacing the fuel pump therefore i am taking the bed off for easy acess i need proper instructions like light disconnections

Best way to accomplish this task is to leave the back two bed bolts on and just loose. then just hoist up the front of the bed and prop it up. I have done numerous fuel pump changes this way.

What is the easiest way to replace the fuel guage and fuel pump for the front tank on a 1995 f150 long bed?

the fuel gauge should not be replace as it should be only one for both tanks when you switch tank selector the wiring also switches so you get reading from the tank you are using .now to replace the fuel pump you have to drop the fuel tank, some people say its easier to remove the bed but i disagree. hope this helps you

Will crank on ether but not without. what is best way to check if fuel pump is working? Has fire to the plugs. Also transmission shifts fine going forward with no slipping but will not go into reverse. its...

Check to see if there is a blown fuse before you try anything.
You should be able to hear it run. Turn the ignition key to the on position and remove the fuel line before the lift pump, should have fuel coming through.
If you have to replace the fuel pump in the tank the best way I found is to actually lift the box. Fuel lines are very short and are easily bent when trying to re-install the lines. You will still of course have to drop the tank but this way makes it much easier to access.

Fuel Pump

The fuel pump is in the gas tank, the best way to do this is to get some friends and remove the bed from the frame. There is i believe 8 bolts that hold the bed to the frame, and don't forget to remove the hardware to the gas tank filler neck. Once the bed is off the frame, you can get to the fuel tank. Disconnect the wire harness and might as well replace the harness since there only $12.00 last i looked, disconnect the fuel line and return line. Remove the fuel pump retainer ring and lift up on the fuel pump sending unit. To install replace the rubber O ring and oil it before installing the new fuel pump sending unit. Install the fuel sending unit retaining ring, gas lines, new wire harness, and filler tube. Good lime also to check the hose to the EVAP since you can inspect them, look for any dry rot to the vacuum lines and replace if needed. Reinstall the bed and use lock tight to the bed bolts or replace them with stainless bolts. Good luck and hope this helps, oh and you might as well change the fuel filter while your have the bed off. The other way is to drop the gas tank which means draining the tank and raising the truck.
