According to the factory service manual, you should drop the tank, there are pictures and diagrams with these in the manual.
A good place to get an inexpensive service manual is from Promanuals it's a complete factory manual.
If you have help its easier and faster to take bed off
For sure way easier to lift the box then to drop the tank. If I remember correctly there is only 4 bolts on each side, take them out than just lift the box on the drivers side, tilt it and support with a few 4x4's or what ever you have laying around. Make sure you prop it up with more thn one thing so if one slips you still got some more to hold it up. Its best to do this with some help but it can be accomplished by one person, I know i've did it a few times and it looks like i'm goinfg to do it again as my fuel pump again will not work. This is pump number 4 for this 2000 GMC and I only have 140'000 km's on it.

before all that do a pressure test and see if the pump is working..
the tank has to be drained and removed.i would not cut a hole in the box.
disconnect the battery, and ground the pump assembly if you are worried about static.
SOURCE: Is there an easy way to check a fuel pump without dropping tank?
perform a presure test at the engine, but there are two pumps on this models, one low pressyre pump in the tank and a high pressure one mounted on the vehicle frame that is the one that go bad more often,so its not a pain to replace, also you can perform a volume test(this one all you need to do is unhook the line to the fuel rail and place the line in a container,at idle it should pump about a pint in 20 seconds.for the pressure test you need a presure gauge the pressure should be between 40 to 50 pounds and hold it for about 10 min.

It's a lot less work to drop the tank, not that hard of a job if you make sure tank is empty.
SOURCE: what is the easiest way to replace fuel pump on
take off the bed and slide it 3 to 5 feet back..and you will have a clear vision of the fuel pump..make sure u disconnect all the light wiring on the rear and the fuel cap and filler hose before removing the bed good luck
