Your not in The USA posted to USA forum that has no such car.
Where is your car on earth? cars are not the same, by where sold. ok?: LAWS vary wildly and soon to get worse.
IN the USA we have only a 2002 Liberty. no such car like yours.
and guess what our books are no the same no is the car.
scan to PCM for DTC errors using a OBD2 scan tool
or get a SHOP to diagnose your transmission.
A/T

your car needs service, check fuses first.?
many cars like this have no A/T dip stick now,
due to owers wrecking the fluid , over and over, and so they got rid of that, #1 wrong act, using wrong fluid, #2 adding too much and causing foam up and bearing starvation and then seized parts.
first scan it, ok? or ask a real shop to do that and for sure a scan tool with Jeeps, P1xxx codes, Jeep factor codes supported.

Hi Guys!
I work in a transmission and torque converter remanufacturing plant and have seen this many times! I hate to tell you that your transmission is shot! There is metal in the fluid and some of it got caught in a solenoid not letting fluid through to shift the gears. You will need a rebuild! About $2500 dollars. Of course if you in Pittsburgh, Pa. area I could do it for about half that. Any questions e-mail me at [email protected]

My 2002 jeep grand cherokee won`t change out of first gear I can only drive under 25 mph?

check fuses.
then scan it.
the scan tool will in fact tell you what the trans is stuck
The PCM shifts the gears, so if it cant, it complains big time.
those are called DTC errors.
all shops in town can scan, or you can buy one and DIY.
on all modern cars. 96+

at 25mph 2nd should happen.
if not, the trans will log, DTC errors. for it.
but it's best to scan and see all errors.
there are are other issues, limphome on engine and transmission.
but the DTC errors show that too.

2002 jeep cherokee laredo won't start new battery

The Jeep DTC P1491 code is actually radiator fan control relay circuit.
Soft reset if the battery disconnect would have erased the code; the first thing I would replace for that code (fan relay).
Additionally, its possible thta your THEFT system is activated, check owners manual to disarm.
Hope this helps.

Check the fluid in Neutral not park make sure parking brake is on and/or tires are scotched before doing so, you can also try putting some " Trans-X" in it from the part store.

94 jeep grand cherokee laredo V8 5.2l automatic. Drives fine but after 10-15 mins of driving After its parked it makes loud popping noise from the rear. Cant locate where the sound is exactly coming from....

You can check fluid level by removing the rubber plug in the cover. Fluid is full when on level ground, it is just at the edge of the hole (or very close) if you are already getting noises out of there, you can remove the cover and inspect gears for wear or breakage. If you find a large amount of metal debris in the lube it tells you something bad is going on back there. Although rebuildable, it's not a home job...requires exact settings in order to operate properly. You can find good units far cheaper than even a gearset costs in any scrapyard. to match ratio, count the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear. the replacement MUST have the exact same number. Before swapping diffs, check all back there to make sure noise is not from somewhere else.

Transmission stays in first gear

it would cost less to replace the transmission than to have that one rebuilt shop around and see if you cant find a trans for it and have someone put it in for you
