SOURCE: noise ... raddle

When the engine is cold, go under the car and try to shake the exhaust system at the approximate spot you hear the rattle coming from. It is most likely a heat shield for the exhaust, or a broken (rusted through) hanger for the exhaust making the noise you describe. You can probably correct it with a wire or couple of screws to secure the shield, or replace a hanger.

SOURCE: Shifter stick kept popping out of gear. eventually

It sounds like the hyd. clutch is not working. If the clutch won't release then you can't get the transmission in a gear while it is running, without that grinding noise.

SOURCE: slight grinding noise in 3rd gear pops out now

your teansmission is going to be overhauled. it sounds like the synchros are going bad. the shifter has forks that move the gears. sometimes the forks wear out and it can cause the gears to wear out because the gears are not going into like they are suppose to. leave comment..

I have a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica. It is making a grinding noise, and won't drive, reverse or stay in park. It was shifting gears perfectly before everything stopped working. Any idea?

Check the CV axles first. They can pop out and cause your noise and won't keep the vehicle from moving in park. Replace the axle/s if they did.

52 grinding noise from under car . not sure if it

Hi, When a grinding noise is detected first locate the area of the car it is being generated from. Most grinding noises will be being generated while driving, if you are having a hard time detecting the location of the grinding sound, have a helper ride along in the rear seat to give a new perspective on the origin of the grinding noise. A grinding noise can be generated by many things from worn out brake pads to axle bearing failure. Once a grinding sound has been detected action must be prompt. Grinding in most cases is telling you something has failed or is failing. It can be as a result of worn out brake pads or shoes, check your engine and transmission mount, check for axle bearing failure, check your power steering system for leak...

Drum brakes causing intermittent grinding noise

Sounds like one of the springs that hold the rear brakes in place broke. Jack her up, pop off the tire, remove the drum and take a look. If you need to see what a good one looks like, look on the other side.

This is not a very common problem, but I saw it last year on a 69 chevelle.

Good Luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

1995 Olds Achieva S Grinding upon starting

They make that kind of noise if its low on fluid, and also depending on how cold it is they will make a lot of noise because the colder it is the thicker the oil is and the harder it is to pump. I am not there to hear the starter, If the starter is making noise it will only be audiable while your on start, i dought starter will make that noise while its running unless the drive is sticking . Have both the pump and starter chk.out.
