All engines are the same passengers side bank 1 right side 1234///rivers side bank 2 left side 5678 if it's front wheel drive your motor is sideways but the banks are the same bank 1 by the firewall bank 2 by the radiator so the #1 cylinder is the first one on the passengers side if rear wheel drive or the first one on the firewall side if front wheel drive

ON THE CAM GEAR THERE IS A NO 1 2 AND 3 IN THE MIDDLE IS 3 HOLES SIZE 6 MM ON EACH HOLE WHICH HOLE MUST A USE. IN WHICHPOSITION MUST THE ROCKERS BEEN PLACED ON NO 1 CYLINDER

The three holes allow you to slightly advance the valve timing to compensate for stretch in the timing chain over time. If the chain is brand new then obviously you would be using hole number one. And by the time its ready to be replaced you should already be on hole number three. The repair manual should tell you all this though and you should not be doing this kind of work without a manual. For early Datsuns like the 240Z I've always found the Haynes manuals to be very good.

I need a diagram for the firing order on an AMC 304 motor

Firing Order: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. You should be able to find the order listed on the intake, just below the front of the carb.

Piston Numbering From Radiator To The Firewall:
Driverside: 1,3,5,7 (1 is closest to the radiator)
Passenger: 2,4,6,8 (2 is closest to the radiator)

Trace your #1 piston spark plug wire from the engine to the distributor. Firing order on the distributor is clockwise from #1.

If that doesn't make sense, go here: http://www.boxwrench.net/specs/schrys_A.htm

Firing order Datsun 710 (4cyl. L20B engine)

Remove the rocker cover.
Turn the engine until it's at TDC on No.1
Both No.1 rockers should be loose.
Remove distributor cap and look where rotor is pointing, this is No.1 plug lead.

I have a miss fire

Recheck the firing order; 1-6-5-4-3-2

On the distributor passenger side radiator to fire wall. 2-4-6-coil
On the distributor drivers side radiator to fire wall. 3-1-5

Cylinder passenger side radiator to fire wall. 2-4-6
Cylinder drivers side radiator to fire wall. 1-3-5

Good luck and also check the distributor cap again for proper seating.
