Pull the transmission. Manual transmission, just pull it and get it out of your way. Get a clutch kit and resurface the flywheel. Automatic transmission, it is a rebuild. either way you need a manual to pull. Then a manual to rebuild the automatic. ATSG.com
get your self the best workshop manual you can afford , this will be invaluable as the rebuilding of an engine , particualy one that large , is not something to be done on a sunday afternoon !
Hardly anybody rebuilds carburetors any more. If you can even find a carburetor kit for the thing, there should be an instruction manual included in the rebuild set.
there are a handfull of secrets to rebuild one of these. An ATSG rebuilding manual will give you nearly everything you need. The secrets usually aren't in the books though.
Check out faxonaitoliterature. They carry original dealer service manuals. They also list a manual called "Rebuilding a Small Block Chevy". It should have everything you need to know. Hope this helps.
