Would using a 80 amp fuse instead of a 60 amp fuse in a 1993 Geo Metro cause problems with the starter?

It shouldn't be. The starter is going to pull as many amps as it needs. The fuse is to protect the wiring and keep the car from catching fire in case the starter fails and tried to pull more current than it should. That being said you need to change it back. 80 amps is 33% more current than what that circuit is designed to carry. Being that it's a 1993 you should probably be on your 3rd starter by now

My 70 amp battery fuse tripped so I put a 60 amp fuse in it tripped also all connections look good no bare wires ect..

a 60 amp is not rated high enough so that is why it tripped,it needs a 70 amp....if this was a house you could have started a fire

1990 Honda 60 amp fuse blows immediately

did you follow both fuse wires,
there are up to 3 fuses there.
one is alternator. if the fuse goes to the big alternator wire
the alternator is shorted inside, (diode pack blown)
that is how i do it.

What does the 60 amp fuse do?

A fuse is a safety device. It will burn out before any wires or other parts do. In other words, it sacrifices itself to protect other devices.
A 60 amp fuse prevents any current over 60 amps to reach parts that can be damaged by that high rating.
