SOURCE: Engine noise cold

these motors made some noise when cold normally due to the clearance. Is it more than that? Have you tried removing plugs and soaking pistons overnight with topengine cleaner this will loosen carbon which makes some cold noise problems.

SOURCE: Engine ticking noise on cold starts

Sounds like a stuck valve lifter. I'd use some oil additive for unsticking lifters.

SOURCE: tappet valve noise

Heavy oil like 20w50 usually isn't the answer for collapsed lifters. Ticking usually happens when the oil supply to one or more of your lifters is compromised. If all your lifters are tapping it is probably your oil pump or its screen. If one lifter is tapping it is probably dirt or a blockage in that lifter's oil supply. Replace your oil with the correct weight oil and try Sea Foam engine treatment. Don't expect instant results. It can take a while to unstick a blockage in those tiny passages. Keep your oil clean.

I have a 2009 with the same problem that the dealer told me was "normal" engine noise. BTW, our loaner does not have this noise.

On start up there was a load tappet noise (clapping) which faded away on my Renault Modus 1.4 16v, should I be worried ?

Wherever the engine stops at least a couple of valves will remain open meaning the maximum valve spring pressure is applied to those hydraulic tappets and a chance the oil will be squeezed out when the engine stands idle for a while. If a tappet or hydraulic lifter is lazy or the oil supply is low, it can take a while for it to recover when the engine is started.

Older VW and the older Ford Mondeo used to be particularly affected and sometimes could take 20 miles of driving before the noise disappeared.

There are engine oil additives designed to liven up lazy tappets.

Noise from engine when cold

this is because the oil has leaked back down out of the hydraulic tappets Replace the filter with a genuine unit as it has a anti drain back valve inside it . Check the viscosity of the oil and consider going up a grade

2000 crv honda just got a new timing belt and water pump after a couple of days now it make a noise (loud clicking noise) when I start it up

The noise you describe may be due to hydraulic tappet leak back form a oil that is of the incorrect viscosity or a cheap oil filter that doe's not have an anti leak back valve in it .The noise is until the oil pressure builds up and makes the hydraulic tappets work properly.

What is tappet settings

Hydraulic tappets are tappets that contain a small hydraulic piston, pressurised by the engine's lubricating oil supply.[5] Although the piston does not move appreciably or frequently, it acts as a hydraulic spring that automatically adjusts the tappet clearance according to the oil pressure. This makes the valve actuation self-adjusting and there is no need to adjust the rockers. Hydraulic tappets depend on a supply of clean oil at the appropriate pressure. When starting a cold engine, with low oil pressure, hydraulic tappets are often noisy for a few seconds, until they position themselves correctly.

Big strange noise, when crank engine, for few seconds

it depends. we need to know a lot more like:
-oil weight used
-when does it happen (morning,afternoon)
-does it happen when hot or cold
-are you driving it offroad

if you had a shortblock replaced at 8000km that tells me something about YOUR driving habits and how you maintain a vehicle

I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma. During the last 2 months when I start the truck in the morning I hear a "tac, tac, tac, tac ...." noise for 30s to 1 min than it stops when I drive away. This...

This is most likely a noisy lifter (or valve tappet). In cold weather, the clearances in the valve train open up because metal contracts due to the cold. Once the oil pressure comes up after start the noise goes away because the larger clearance fills with oil and the lifter becomes "cushioned" with the oil. The proper fix is to have the valves adjusted. I believe in your model, that is done by putting shims on the lifters. This will quiet the noisy lifters. In the short term, you can try using a lighter weight oil for cold weather. This will get the oil to the lifters faster after start up and quiet the tapping more quickly. Once the weather warms again, shift back to the normal weight.

Hi Christo.
If you hear a tappet noise when the engine is started, and it goes away after a few seconds, if is not a very serious problem. What is happening is that you have Hydraulic lifters that maintain they're adjustment when the motor is not running. One of the lifters is collapsing. When you start the engine it pumps back up and works. Since lifters are at the top of the engine, you should that you use. It is called "Sea Foam". It is an excellent product to ad to the oil. It helps keep the engine cleaner and removes any moisture from the oil. It is great with hydraulic lifters.
Just so you know the difference. If you have a sticking lifter, you will have a constant tapping sound. I have used Sea Foam to un-stick lifters successfully.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A WORD ABOUT THE REPLACMENT OF THE KIA RIO TIMING BELT
.

It is recommend that the belt be changed at 60,000 miles.
I also recommend that the dealer do it.
If the car is under warranty you must tell the dealer to replace it. If you do not tell them to replace it, THEY WILL NOT.
If the belt breaks, it will DESTROY the engine.
Hope this is helpful to you. Happy New Year
Greetings, Mark
