I have a 82 Jeep Cherokee With the inline 6 and according to the factory oil pressure gauge i have no oil pressure when idling. I have replaced the sending unit and the pump with a high volume pump with no change. I plan on getting a mechanical gauge to double check the factory gauge if it is still low I was thinking main bearings might be my next choice. Any suggestions would be appreciated to help with any unnessessary repairs.

I agree but i was told the engine had been overhauled recently . But their idea of recently and overhaul might be consideralbly different from my mine or yours just trying to get some facts and test done to make an informed decicion of which way to go

It would be cam bearings not main bearings, check with a manual guage first, if you had no oil pressure your enging would be making metal to metal knocking noises and then seize up... Suggestion at the time you remove a oil galley plug with engine off, then disconnect coil wire from ign so engine will not start then have someone help bump the starter and crank engine over while you watch for oil flow from engine block... Check flow then insert manual oil pressure guage...

Well most idiot light type oil pressure warning lights do not light up until oil pressure is below 5 psi , which most engine will run fine at 5 psi at idle or even low rpm but will starve for oil at higher rpms...

If you engine is old enough and tired enough to have issues with the oil pump out put chances are the rest of the engine is do for overhaul also. Just a suggestion rather than throwing new parts a little at a time why not do a thorough rebuild job with the motor completely out, you will find it will give you more confidence in the vehicle especially on long drives, in the long run you could actaully save money and disappointments... What is your oil pressure at 2000 rpms? And you never said what the pressure was after you re-checked it with a manual gage...

And also is there any knocking noise or any noises at all emitting from the oil pan area or mid motor area?

Oil gauge may be bad, you said you changed the oil sending unit, and tried a aftermarket which worked, so the other option is to have you oil gauge checked. The sending unit may be good but you gauge is not reading proper.

Oil pressure loss

the 1st thing u do is have the oil pressure tested with a test mechanical gauge by a shop, most times it is just the oil pressure sending unit is defective, but never assume that is the problem, low oil pressure will distroy a $5000.00 engine very quickly, u can just try a new sending unit, but highly recommend a pressure test with a mechanical gauge before you run the engine anymore.

1998 Jeep Cherokee Oil Pressure Question

installation is pretty much tighten and plug in as described. if gauge goes to 0 with engine off u should be fine. 15psi idle 40 psi higher rpm is normal. it is possible new switch not as as sensitive as old.

Oil gauge fluctuates back and forth. sometimes

You'll need to determine if the oil pressure is actually changing, or if the sending unit or gauge is lying to you. Be certain the oil level is up to normal, then check the actual oil pressure with a test gauge. If the pressure varies (drops) at engine idle, perhaps your pressure bypass is defective, or perhaps the oil pump is worn. Testing with a known good pressure gauge should lead you in the right direction.

You need to verify the real oil pressure with a good oil pressure gauge. These are pretty simple gizmoes with a gauge and a hose. Get a hold of one and it screws in where the pressure sender is connected. Most engines need around 45 psi at idle. If it's not OK look for diluted oil, wrong viscosity oil or worse yet worn engine bearing or oil pump.

Hook up a manifold gauge (mechanical temporary use gauge, used by mechanics) and test the oil pressure. You probably need to replace the gauge. The computer sends info through a printed circuit board behind gauge cluster and sometimes you have to replace the whole gauge cluster.
