The high pressure filter and fluid are supposed to be changed at 60k intervals. Ford has a very specific oil for this transmission and the service fee will be $300 to $450 - mine was around $420.

No other car place will touch the CVS transmission in a Ford Freestyle and most Ford dealerships are clueless on thier maintenance and repairs. On most issues that crop up the first thing they want to do is swap it out - for $4000+.

It's usually best to change the oil at 40,000 miles because not all of the tranny fluid drains out, as some of the old oil is still in the torque converter.

Your recommended it for 30,000, unless it has been driven hard, then you could change it at a sooner time.

****UPDATE****

Ford will use a pressurized system to drain ALL of the transmission oil including the residual oil stuck in the torque converter. If you have the transmission oil drained at a local oil changer and/or mechanic, then the transmission oil will not be properly drained because they will rely on gravity rather than high pressure to drain it. I drained mine at 80,000 miles

Where is the transmission fluid drain plug located on 2006 ford freestar

The videos indication you need an oil transfer machine which is a vacuum cleaner machine. The third link explains how to fit a drain plug to a Freestar. It is probably a job better done by Jiffy Lube or similar.

Transmission is all electronically controlled , no vacuum hose's to transmission .
Which trans does it have ? continuously variable transaxle (CVT)
or 6 speed automatic
This transaxle is a compact, lightweight, next generation electronically controlled, 6-speed automatic transaxle that employs a Ravigeneaux-type planetary gear.

My 2006 Ford freestyle starts alright, but it does not move when I select a gear. The engine idles smoothly.

Ford knows there is a problem with the 2006 Freestyle CVT transmission but won't do anything about it because there weren't enough cars with the problem to recall. You will probably need to replace your transmission..

06 Ford Freestyle FWD CVT Fluid Level Measuring (IDLE? or off?)

Hi,
According to the Ford shop manual, the cvt transmission has a transmission fluid dipstick located on the front of the transmission (drivers side between the radiator and trans. The fluid should be checked with the transmission temp between 190deg F and 198deg F ( I think hot engine covers it) running in park. The fluid should be in the crosshatched area of the dipstick. With the the transmission between 109deg f and 117deg f running in park the fluid should be at the bottom hole of the dipstick. This whole procedure is based on your being able to monitor the transmission fluid temperature. If you have a scan tool that shows you live data and you are able to monitor the temp, good. But if you don't own a scan tool and buying one would cancel out the savings of doing your own trans service................ then if it were me I would top off the fluid at the hot (190-198deg f) temp adding a little at a time until I was just near the top of the crosshatch area. I think logic prevails here. If the manual wants the fluid at the bottom hole with a cool trans then we must assume that when the trans is hot it wont be above the top hole. And I also want to add that if this fluid level was this critical then I would think I would have alot of freestyles going thru my shop with transmission concerns as soon as one sprung the smallest leak.
I really hope this helps you out and good for you for doing your own service, I admire that!

I work at a Ford dealer and we have seen very little trouble with this trans-axle. We replaced a mectronics unit in one and replaced one complete assembly, other then that we have had no trouble with them and personally would have no fear of buying one.
