I am looking for the manual for replacing a clutch on a 1997 volkswagen polo

Did you disconnect the battery when doing that electrical work?

Did you reset the security system and engine immobilizer?

does the noise go when you push the clutch pedal down, if so its more than likely the springs in the clutch plate. replacement needed

Most owners manuals you can find a download online for free, I would just use a search engine using 97 1600cc vw polo as your search..

I don't have specific info on the Polo, but in the Golfs of that era I think there was a plastic retaining ring than unscrewed, after which the pump / sender unit was a bayonet fitting that came out after turning it anticlockwise a bit.
Remove the filler cap first to depressurise the system, don't get the hoses mixed up and be sure to disconnect the battery - you'll be opening the petrol tank !

Hope this helps, but a Haynes or Bentley manual will often repay the purchase price after only one job.
