2004 Jeep Wrangler automatic gear shift won't lock into any of the gears. You can just move it back and forth from park all the way to drive and it won't engage whether the engine is running or off.

what does that mean, it has no clear meaning at all.
first is car a auto or stick (mines a stick)
stays in gear can mean many things,,,
1: A/t shift lever stuck in drive, you never said what gear,?
2: M/t sticks shift car, , the car moves in gear, with clutch held to floor.

try to change you car battery and then shift to park and try to start the engine if that didint help contact me on [email protected] i will help you to get it back agian

The first thing to do is check the brake lights, it they are not working the park lock system will not release the shifter.

can you go from drive to 2cnd or 1st gear?

try pushing the knob down onto the shifter a little bit then try and shift. Sometimes if that knob is raised even a little bit it will be locked in park. Can't be 100% sure without seein it but worth a shot. Hope that helps you.

Try to check the trans mission gears of your 1995 jeep grand cherokee.The shift fork and the clutch sleeve of the trans mission is locking to the other gears .And then also check the starter motor and its solenoid.if the starter motor solenoid is destroyed or worn out replace .

It could be lash in the differential which is normal, but it could also be a loose u-joint in the driveshaft. Check the rear driveshaft u-joints.

i would say your reverse gear is locking up on you and that you need to get it to a transmission shop before you break the gear off trying to back it up,,it will mess up the other gears
