The CV joints are needed to transfer the torque at a constant speed to
steered wheels as well as to accommodate up and down motions of the
suspension.
You will find CV joints in all front-wheel drive cars. Many rear- and four-wheel drive cars and trucks have CV joints as well.
The CV joint is packed with grease and protected by the rubber or plastic boot.
It does not require any maintenance and supposed to last very long provided that protective boot will not get damaged.

Hello SUAVE8815: My name is Roger and I will answer your question. A c/v joint are the joint on the end of the drive axle half shafts. The outside joint is called the outer c/v joint. The inner joint is called the tripoid joint. It is cheaper to replace the entire half shaft then to replace either joint.

Yes, they are on the inside and outside of the drive shafts, they allow the shafts to rotate at an agle ie when steering round a corner and they wear and cause metallic noises when turning corners
SOURCE: how to replace CV joints on a 1998 Plymouth
there is a seal that is on either side of the transmission where the cv shafts go in. They are pressed into the transmission and will either be black or brown. If you are missing one they are available from your local parts store and can be easily installed with some light tapping with a hammer.
