1991 dodge dakota 5 speed manual trans .... where do I check the transmission fluid level ?

A plug on the side of the tranny will be the filler, If you have a drain plug in the bottom, If not, you will have two on the side, lower is level, upper is fill. Most manual trannys never get checked or filled, they go for life without the oil being changed. check it out.

Manual transmission oil change method - Dakota

Disconnect the plug underneath to drain fluid, look in your service manual to find the capacity and viscosity. There is a plug in the side of the transmission as well that is the filler plug, however it is more convenient to pour through the shifter once you remove it. If you use the filler plug method you will have to attach a tube to the oil bottle and squeeze it into the transmission as there may not be ample room to tilt the bottle and use gravity.

Hi, I have a 1988 Dodge Dakota, 2 WD, 6 cylinder with a 4 speed plus overdrive manual transmission. Here is my problem/question. I was told when I got my oil changed this week that there is water in my...

Alright Bruce. The transmission has a plug on the side. Its near the top and that will be your fill plug. Your drain plug will be on the bottom of the transmission. The plugs are bolts I believe. I know the bottom drain plug is a bolt. If you have water in the transmission fluid then there will be a white look to it when you drain it from the transmission. You dont run a automatic transmission fluid. If you have a NAPA or local parts store near by, there is this oil made by AMSOil that works amazing, Its called AMSOil Synchromesh Manual Transmission fluid. Its about 10 dollars a bottle and I believe you would need two for your truck. There is no weight for the fluid, its just one type. You should not need anything else to complete the job unless you dont have a oil pan to drain the oil into, and you will also need a floor jack since yours is a 2 wheel drive and they sit pretty low. Hope this helps.
Have a nice day, -Steve
