Engine diagram Again I failed I have a 440 big block I it is in a Sportscoach it is only firing on 4 maybe 5 cylinders I cannot see much in the engine compartment. I need to know Which cylinder is the no. 1 then the no. 2 and so on like if you draw a block with 8 circles two on top and four down. I am sorry to be so inexperienced.

Firing Order

• 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

• Distributor Rotation

• Counter-Clockwise

• Cylinder Numbering

• Front to back
• 1, 3, 5, 7 on the driver side
• 2, 4, 6, 8 on the passenger side

You could have 3 different engines in that rig.
The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 for most Dodge 8 cyl engines.
And the odd cylinders are on the driver side.
The small block engines ( 318 ) have the distributor in the back, and the big block engines ( 360 440 ) are in the front.
The rotor on the big blocks turn counterclockwise. The dist cap is usaully stamped with cyl 1 as a starting point.

Your cylinders 1-4 passenger side,5-8 drivers side. Firing order is 15426378, looking at engine #1 is at 1 o'clock position, and order goes counter clockwise. The timing varies from year to year - call Ford w/your eng. # for exact timing. To get you in the ballpark,12 degrees BTDc if you have a vac guage, connect to a vac source on intake, crank motor up turn distributor until you get highest vac reading, then back off 3 lbs of vac.

Depending on what engine you have, hear are the firing orders:
Small block 302 or big block 460: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
Small block 351: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
Looking at the engine from the front, cylinder number 1 is at the front on your left. That side is numbered 1-2-3-4. Number 5 cylinder is at the front on your right and the numbering is 5-6-7-8. The distributor spins counterclockwise. Number 1 is usually marked on the cap. If not, no.1 on the cap is about 1 o'clock as you're looking at it from the front. Good luck!
