How do I replace an IMT valve?

Code P2070, IMT valve stuck open. How do I go about finding what the potential problem is? Where is the IMT valve and how difficult is it to replace?

Your reply (SSV instead of IMT valve), what does SSV stand for and where is it on my 2007 Saturn Relay? What is the recommended method of cleaning the carbon from this component?

    Thanks,

    rixsfixes,

Thanks for the information, but I am looking for something more specific on the location of the valve on my Saturn Relay. Is it near the air intake of the manifold? Is it the large spring loaded "valve" with a four wire connector located in the aluminum neck of the intake plennum? I have removed the cover of this unit, it has a couple gears in it that appear to be working fine. Is this the IMT or do I need to look somewhere else?

Still unable to positively locate the IMT. That is what I am trying to find out.

Hi

SSV is the secondary shutter valve - different term for a similar issue.

IMT = Intake Manifold Tuning

P2070: Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Stuck Open.An intake manifold tuning (IMT) valve is used to change the intake manifold plenum configuration. When the IMT valve is open, the intake manifold is configured to one large plenum. When the IMT valve is closed, the intake manifold is configured to 2 smaller plenums. The IMT valve improves engine performance at low and high engine speeds depending on the engine load.

The valve is situated on the inlet manifold on your engine.

Hope this helps. Please remember to rate this answer. Many Thanks.

I found this about po660 and hope it helps:
Intake Manifold Tuning Valve circuit Malfunction.
Description:
The IMTV system is monitored for failure during continuous, key ON engine OFF or key ON engine running self-test. The test fails when the signal on the monitor pin is more or less than an the expected calibrated range.

Causes:
IMTV signal circuit open, shorted to PWR GND or SIG RTN
Damaged IMRC actuator
Damaged PCM

Location:
The location of the imtv is opposite the throttle body connected to the intake manifold. From what I understand the cel should not be lit. Is that right? Not sure on warranty.

If I find the repair manual, advise to you, but I need more details about car model.

Good luck!!!

Hi..
I think it is SSV instead of IMT valve.
P2070 (SSV Stuck Open). This may be caused by carbon build up near the SSV bushing, which may cause driveability concerns (hesitation and / or lack of power) and / or DTC P2070. A cleaning procedure and a revised SSV with stronger actuator force.
Thanks
Smith

Question moved to model category.

It is the intake manifold tuning valve that is stuck and fortunately not the Inlet valve itself.

I have a Pontiac G6 v6 3.9 .. I have a code p2078 twice.. do I have to change the intake manifold tuning valve sensor or what?

What year is it ?
DTC P2078: Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Position Sensor Circuit High Voltage
Associated with this code or any coded is a diagnostic flow chart ,for testing of the electrical circuit's for the position sensor . If you don't know that ,an know how to test electrical circuit's ,your best bet , take it to a qualified repair . Rather then guessing an just replacing parts .

Circuit/System Description
An intake manifold tuning (IMT) valve is used to change the intake manifold plenum configuration. When the IMT valve is open, the intake manifold is configured to one large plenum. When the IMT valve is closed, the intake manifold is configured to 2 smaller plenums. The IMT valve improves engine performance at low and high engine speeds depending on the engine load. The IMT valve assembly consists of the following:
• A tuning valve
• A microprocessor
• An electric motor
• A hall-effect sensor
• An ignition voltage circuit
• A ground circuit
• An IMT valve control circuit
• An IMT valve signal circuit

P2078
The engine control module detects an open in the IMT valve ground or a continuous short to voltage in either the IMT valve signal circuit or the sensor. This diagnostic runs continuous when the conditions for running are met.
Test the electrical circuit's !!!!!!! you would need a wiring diagram

Circuit/System Testing
Ignition OFF, disconnect the IMT valve harness connector at the IMT valve.
Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the IMT valve ground circuit terminal B and ground.
? If greater than the specified value, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the IMT valve ignition 1 voltage circuit terminal A and ground.
? If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the IMT valve ignition 1 voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the fuse for the IMT valve ignition 1 voltage circuit is open, test or replace the IMT valve.
Connect a test lamp between the IMT valve control circuit terminal C and the IMT valve ignition 1 voltage circuit terminal A.
Command the IMT valve ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
? If the test lamp is always ON, test the IMT valve control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the engine control module.
? If the test lamp is always OFF, test the IMT valve control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the engine control module.
Ignition ON, test for 4-6 volts between the IMT valve signal circuit terminal D and ground.
? If less than the specified range, test the IMT valve signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the engine control module.
? If greater than the specified range, test the IMT valve signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the engine control module.
Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the IMT valve signal circuit terminal D and ground. Verify the scan tool IMT valve Feedback parameter transitions from 0-100 percent.
? If parameter does not change, test the IMT valve signal circuit for short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the engine control module.
If all circuits test normal, test or replace the IMT valve.

I have engine codes;p2070,p0128,p0605,and p0457 and i dont know what they are let alone how to fix said issues

nobody does.... that is why they have ASE school.
here is a list of starting places.
1: check all fuses.
2: then post all driving and running symptoms... (got any?)
3: then scan it ( you did)
4: then look each up in the FSM (p2 code is Suzuki only code so...)
5: then do the tests the book says to do , to find real cause
the PCM never knows what is wrong, it only knows tests fail , only.

here, ill look at alldata.com and look (so can you) USA cars.... so........
2070 is IMT stuck.
IMT is varible intake induction ports. (small /large )
this new feature allows better low end engine torque. (fancy )
Trouble Code Conditions:
Ignition ON. No IMT valve position sensor fault exists. No IMT valve solenoid fault exists. Ambient temperature is greater than -9.75 C (14.45 F). Battery voltage is between 9.95 and 25.89 V. DTC P2071 is not set. IMT valve flap is not completely closed.
Possible Causes:
  • Vaccum leakage from hoses or connections.
  • Vaccum reservoir.
  • IMT valve solenoid.
  • IMT valve position sensor.
  • Excessive mechanical friction in the flap operation.

Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature is your thermostat , 8 years old, ??????????
what a tech does is read the temp and if too l low does tests to find cause., we never guess. do simple tests. ask how.

605 (a horror) i've no idea. (reset and pray) Trouble Code Conditions:
A) ECM calculation function is malfunctioning. B) ECM EEP-ROM system is malfunctioning. C) ECM self shut-off function is malfunctioning. NOTE: The ECM enters fail-safe mode when malfunction A is detected: * The ECM stops the electric throttle control actuator control, throttle valve is maintained at a fixed opening (approx. 5 degrees) by the return spring. * The ECM deactivates ASCD operation.
Possible Causes:
  • * Faulty ECM

Evaporative (EVAP) Emission System Fuel Cap Leak Detected gas cap loose?
this means, the tank vent , is breached, or the controls bad.
we tighten the cap , reset the codes and drive, if comes back.
test cap or get new one. or if cap is good. we do the leak down
test fully stated in the FSM. (by the book) read it. its very clear.

what id do is fix the 2070 first.
then reset all codes drive and see what comes back.

what i do, is look at out door temps. is it -20F out or +70F?
i dont know your location so cant guess.
but if not fridge out, i make sure the engine hits 180F coolant temps
at a normal runnning time. (normal) if its too low or too slow the stat is no good. if the fan is stuck on, FIX that first. because a stuck on fan
in fridged temps, can in fact slow a engine warmup time.
I use a tool ($20) that is an IR Pyro temp gun.
I point it at the thermostat housing, and look at the temp hot.
then scan the PCM and see what the ECT shows.
if they agree, the PCM was not fibbing. see?
lets say it reads, 150 hot. bad, and the ECU shows 151
they do agree. and the water is too cold.
we then do test to find out why,
if the fan is off, then a new thermostat is the next act.
way up north we have cardboard blocking the RAD to get
faster warm ups and full cab heat. so....... location is everytinng
Alaska or Key west, FL?, things are different there.

I always work cooling first, because the PCM just HATES
frigid motors. causes all else to go , lil crazy.

Pressure Control Solenoid C - Coe P1078

06 CR-V
when you hit the dear, things can break. what's surprising there?
id get a car safety inspection, road worthy ness checks.....really.
google is not your friend here, not for P1 codes. (unless very careful)
and the P1078 code only works on Hondas.
Not only that autozonded scans may show the wrong code.
why? because their scan tool is junk, ! (SSDD)
the FSM covers that 100% read that. for all the tests.

ill pretend the scan tool is not junk and reads Honda's correctly.]

P1 codes are factory codes, and reading ford, or chev or ? on that will
all be lies. P1078 is:
DTC P1078:
Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) System Malfunction (High rpm) Stuck
Long.

DTC P1078:
Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Syst
em Malfunction (High rpm) Stuck
Long
P1078-0570
General Description
The intake manifold tuning (IMT) valve position sensor is mounted on the diaphragm valve shaft to detect a malfunction in the IMT valve.
The engine control module (ECM) / powertrain control module (PCM)
checks both the IMT solenoid valve command and the IMT valve position sensor output.
If the IMT valve position sensor output is Short (short runners) while the IMT solenoid valve is OFF, a malfunction (IMT remains Short / closed ) is detected and a DTC is stored

(what does this mean)
bar stool answer.
the deer hit my car.
the vacuum line fell of the IMT VSV and now the slave sensor fails.
there are 3 parts to the VSV (PCM command) sends vacuum
to the slave , then slave rod moves, the sensor in the slave
(readback pot) shows that it did move correctly
yours is stuck long.

I have a mazda rx8. my engine light comes on and code is P2070.intake manfold tuning valve stuck open.trying to find were it is located on my car

ok, we here found a problem similar to this, the 2006 RX8 we had has a problem with the sensor at the end of the IMT valve, which lets the computer know weather the valve is open or closed. Have a technician OHM the sensor, IF it reads open and closed, remove the valve, and clean , then clear code and drive.

Code P2004 Bank 1 runners stuck open, What is the fix for this?

Hi,

This code indicates Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Open, Bank 1

Its hard to be very specific about a fix on this as there are a few potential fixes including the outright replacement of the intake manifold. If the Manifold Flow Valve blades are seized in the intake manifold, the manifold will have to be replaced
However this code can sometimes have a very easy fix and if you are lucky you may find that it is caused by a split vacuum hose connecting to the actuator. A leak in the vacuum system will set the code and I suggest you check this out first as a potential cause.

Thanks for using FixYa.
