My 1992 GMC Yukon sputters when idle. Usually occurs immediately after the throttle has been released. The engine does not stall, but rather sputters for a few seconds then returns to a normal idle.

It can be low fuel pressure issue or clogged fuel pump. Or its engine related issues,---------------

Doesn't sound like you've considered spark. Sounds like you're losing spark somehow. You seem to know your way around a truck, so I don't have to explain every little thing. Just check all the ignition stuff, go through the distributor and coil and plugs and wires. If it's gettin fuel, its either a spark issue or air/vaccum issue. Hope this helps.

sounds like a spark timing issue. dist/coils or plugs. the only other thing and this is weird-the coolant temp sensor

If the scan will narrow down which o2 sensor it is and replace it. If it has more than one on that year that is. Under load you will probable have a richer fuel mix. If the sensor is going going bad it may only get out of spec reading under heavy load and warmer temps. I have had similar issues with GM and it was easily fixed.

is this a missfire? have you replaced the MAF sensor which is a common cause of this, if over 100,000 miles replace plugs and plug wires as well.

It sound like your air idle control valve may have gone bad or the wire harness has unclipped. The common problem is the air idle control valve has carbon build up. Try spraying Throttle body cleaner, (NOT CARBURETOR CLEANER)in through the throttle body. USE the whole can, just follow the instruction on the can. Once that has been done, turn the engine off, turn the ignition key to the run position for 30 seconds and then turn if off for 10 seconds then start it and let idle for 1 min and go for a test drive. If it's still stalling check all the wire connection to the air idle control valve and try cleaning it again. If that doesn't work then your going to have to replace the air Idle control valve. Try cleaning it first the cost of the control valve is around $100.00 give or take and most dealers will try cleaning it first before they replace it, since they know you'll be back for it to be cleaned again in the future telling you they manage to save you some money buy cleaning the one you have. I had a similar problem and resolved it by replacing the mass airflow sensor. Ive got 235k+ miles on my 1992 Maxima SE.
Still runs good but having problems with the alarm system.

try to get a scan code . it may be the throttle sensor or a number of things.they san for free at AutoZone.

Most sensors will trigger the check engine light, however the TPS(throttle position sensor) or EGR Valve(exhuast gas recirculation valve) could be potential causes. Does this problem only occur at idle? Is the idle normal in park? Let me know and I can try to assit further.
