Fuel-spit back from my 2005 Dodge Durango

I just bought a used 2005 Dodge Durango last week. Each time I've tried to put gas into it, it spits it right back up. In order to put $20 worth of gas in in, I have to pump and let go about 20 times (about every dollar inteval) and even then, some gas squirts out or atleast gurgles around the opening when I pull the nozzle out. I read about the recall online and had a new gas tank put in today, free of charge of course. The problem is as soon as I left the dealership and tried to put gas in, the same thing happened - maybe even worse. The pump now cuts me off every 2-3 seconds. It takes forever!!!! I went back and was told the recall was just for the tank and it's "probably" a problem with the fuel filler tube???? He quoted me 264 + tax just for the parts of something that is "probably" the cause. Should the filler tube have been replaced as well? Oh yeah, most people with this complaint say that the fuel spits back when their tank is full. Well it doesn't matter how much gas my Durango has in it. Even if I have less than a quarter of a tank, the same thing happens.

First of all, thank you so much for your feedback!! I have since then had the gas tank replaced free of charge because I had heard of the recall. While the gas doesn't come back up as often or forcibly as before, I still have the problem where the pump constantly clicks off on me. I can only get 5, maybe 10 dollars worth of has at a time - and this takes forever since it clicks off at like every 50 cent interval. I went to the gas station one block away from the dealership after the replacement & immediately took it back! They said it seems to be a problem w/the filler tube and not the tank. Since the filler tube connects to the tank but is actually not part of the tank, it's not part of the recall!? That's the part I'm not getting. Seems like it should be covered. I just don't want to pay for something they should've fixed. I feel like thay are pulling one over on me.

WOO stop there is a major recall with the 05 durangos the check valves get stuck they are recalling the gas tanks on thousands of those car. that is a big fire hazard. Go to the dealer I garente ur vehcle is recalled u may have not gotten the notice in the mail yet. Please rate if this helps.

Here is a copy of the dealer recall notice.

2005 (HB) Dodge Durango
NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles built from October 13, 2004
through November 30, 2004 (MDH101300 through 113023).
The fuel tank inlet check valve on about 18,900 of the above vehicles may stick in
the open position. This can cause fuel to spill out of the filler tube when the
vehicle is being refueled. Fuel in the presence of an ignition source can result in a
fire.
The fuel tank inlet check valve must be tested for proper operation. Vehicles with
a sticking check valve must have the fuel tank replaced.

Spits out fuel when I try to pump

For some reason, your fuel tank seems to be heating up or there is pressure within the tank. Thats why the fuel spits back..the vapours inside cause the filling mechanism to reject the filling apparatus.

It could also be a block in the fuel lines, or some other reason. Its too hard to say without a manual inspection.

My best advice would be to take it to your mechanic and have him take a look at it to diagnose the exact problem.

Should you find this advice satisfactory, kindly take a moment to "Accept" this solution. Thanks in advance and best of luck!

Dodge spits and sputers on half a tank

Have fuel pressure tested. Pump may be getting weak, filter plugged, or not likely but possible, hole in pick-up tube in tank. Make sure you try to have it tested when lower and spitting and sputtering.
