I have a 2004 Chevy Malibu and can't get the trunk open. The remote and trunk release buttons haven't worked for a while. Now the key won't open it either. When I turn the key, I get nothing.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
I have a 2005 chevy malibu and i close the trunk with the keys inside and the little button on the door is stock but the car is open is and other way to open the trunk from inside of the car?
I have the same problem: trunk button clicks but does not open trunk. The Trunk relay #36 in the trunk fuse box is the cause. There are 3 of these relays; Parklamps 27, Trunk 36 and Fuel Pump 37. I swapped 36 with 27 and 37 which both fixed the trunk but the bad trunk relay would not work the lights or fuel pump. I am buying a new relay tomorrow, cost is about $20.
Here is a picture of the relay and the trunk fuse box layout.
I have a 2005 Malibu Maxx hatchback 4dr and the remote starter originally worked but is currently not working, only the lights flash when I do the proper sequence on the remote. Any ideas? Also I am having issues with the gas gauge after it hits 1/8th of a tank it goes to empty, any way to replace the sensor to fix this or anything I can do?
Sounds like your automatic trunk release is binding or stalled and needs to be replaced. Check the owners manual to see where the fuse is for the trunk release and verify that the fuse is ok. Sometimes if you press down on the trunk, it is easier to open the release manually. I don't have a Malibu but the rear hatch release in my SUV and in many of my friends vehicles has acted up in this manner.

My dealer replaced the lock 2 times under warranty and did not fix the problem.
In the left quarter panel in the trunk there is an access panel with fuses and relays. Find the relay for the trunk lock and switch it to one of the same for something else and see if that fixes your problem. The replacement relay is under $10 at any auto parts store.
This fixed my problem that the dealer could not fix.
Look how long ago this was posted and reposted , ridiculous
I have a 2004 malibu classic the remote didnt release the trunk but to put the key in and turn it worked fine. So got the remote to work now to turn the key to open the trunk doesnt work i have to turn it a 3/4 turn to open when it should open at a quarter turn. The chev fh daily tell me the is the way there made what ever so right now there going to try to fix it
My wifes 05 malibu did the same thing. There is an emergency lever inside the trunk. Ours was slightly pulled, not enough to hold the latch open, but not enough to tell the car it wasn't pulled. I pushed the lever completely closed and normal operation with both the key fob and the button on the door panel resumed instantly.
The contact points inside the remote control are worn or your battery inside the remote needs replaced. I replaced the battery on my and then I glued in some aluminum foil on the rubber contact points so it makes good contact with the circuit board points. If this does not work you will need to replace the remote.

sounds like the button has shorted out,, pop it out and jumper the 2 wires that go to it, if the trunk opens replace the button, if not,, your getting voltage feedback to the button and it will eventually burn out

If the noise you hear comes from the location of the lock then it's made then the lock mechanism gets activated by the button but the locking pin doesn't move - this means that the rod that was supposed to move the pin has become dislodged from it.
If the noise comes from inside the trunk then it's caused by the failure of the relay that commands the solenoid that pulls on the rod.
First try to replace the relay (#36). For that you will have to crawl in the trunk to access it - under the trim cover, the exact position is explained, with photos, in the owners manual. If the relay is OK or it behaves the same even after you have replaced it then it's clearly the solenoid/rod's fault - you will have to go in and open the gate manually from the inside: remove the trunk trim cover and pull on the locking pin with your fingers or a piece of wire.
If you think you can't do that yourself then take it to your local repair shop, no dealer needed.

Try to apply pressure from the top of the trunk and push short burst while using the key, If this doese not work you can try to enter from the rear seat taking out the bolts for the rear back rest.
