This is usually because the spring the pops it open is broken, have someone pry on the fuel door while ppulling the release inside, the spring clips onto the hinge if it's broken get a replacement from the toyota dealer
I have the same problem. The plastic posts on the arm rest broke off and the 2 screws at the hinge have nothing to bite into. What did you end up doing? Were you able to glue with something? They want to sell you the whole center console for 300 and I only need the lid part. I was thinking some epoxy but I doubt that will hold.
You can get inside door handle either new or used from sellers on ebay. It should be just a few dollars plus shipping. Just search ebay for "Inside door handle 1991 Toyota Corolla."
open the driver's side door and look on the side of the dash. If it's not there, check the passenger's side on the center console. If not there, check under the hood.
Go to your nearest Toyota dealer. Purchase this part number: 77360-22020; approx 4 dollars.
Open the fuel door. Being careful, remove the leftover plastic that is hooked by the door hinge. Insert the new spring assembly under the slot, and press it in until it clicks into place. Very easy to do.
Hope this helps, and thanks for choosing FixYa.
There's two screws by the handle, pull those out and you'll see how it all connects on the inside. I was able to remove my broken one, and drill a hole into the plastic where it broke and reuse it - it's lasted over 4 years now.
