How can i compress the caliper piston back of audi a6 2000 2.8l awd what kind of tools i need . Vise grip is not working.

For front brake pads replacement you need only usually wrench set, inclusive 7 mm allen key also.
But for rear brake pads replacement you need obligatory a special caliper piston pressing tool, in order to press back rear caliper piston with parking brake automatic adjustment!!!

For front brake pads. You should buy the brake pads (with wear sensor). For change front brake pads you must raise vehicle, remove wheels, extract the retaining spring of the caliper, and remove the caliper as follow:
1. Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper, and do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose!
2. Remove top and bottom caps (on back side of the caliper) for access to guide pins, then unbolt and remove them from the brake carrier. Remove the caliper.
3. Now you must thoroughly clean the brake calipers (free of grease).
4. Remove outer brake pad from brake carrier.
5. Pull inner brake pad out of brake caliper piston.
6. Check up the brake fluid level on the reservor, and emptying if neccessary!
7. Push piston back into brake caliper housing.
8. Install inner brake pad (with expanding spring) in brake caliper piston. (Arrow marked on pad - if exist, must point in direction of brake disc rotation when vehicle is moving forward).
9. Install outer brake pad into brake carrier.
10. Bolt brake caliper housing to brake carrier using two guide pins. Tightening torque is 25 Nm.
11. Install both caps.
12. Insert retaining spring into brake caliper housing. Important: Depress the brake pedal firmly several times while the car is stationary so that the brake pads adjust to their normal operating positions!!!

Check brake fluid level and top up if neccessary!!!

Steps to replacing rear brake pads

A special tool is required to compress the caliper piston on the rear brakes-don't use a C-clamp on the piston.
Raise the vehicle and remove the tire. The rear calipers have only one guide pin. Remove this pin and raise the caliper. Remove the old brake pads. Using the special tool compress the caliper piston-the piston will have one or two slots on it. These slots must in the correct position to remount the caliper. Install the new brake pads and slide the caliper back over the rotor and replace the guide pin. If the caliper doesn't slide over the rotor you'll need to reset the slots on the piston. Replace the tires and you're ready to go.

Rear brake pads replace

Rent a tool from auto zone to help you compress the rear brake piston. It cannot be compressed with c clamp because the piston must be turned while it is compressed.
Autozone will charge you approx. $60 for the rental and then you get all your money back when you bring the tool back.
You need to compress the rear piston so you have room for the new, thicker pads.
The rest of the job is just like any other brake job. 1. remove one pin bolt and rotate caliper open to get to the pads. 2. compress the piston in with the tool 3. replace the pads. 4. assemble.

I AM TRYING TO RE NEW THE REAR BREAK PADS ON MY VW CADDY VAN , BUT HAVE FOUND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO PUSH THE PISTON ON THE CALIPER BACK IN ORDER TO POSITION OVER THE NEW PADS . I HAVE CARRIED OUT THE SAME...

hi from uk the rear brake calipers are auto adjust and so to reset the pistons back into calipers you need to rewind clockwise the piston whilst pushing piston back there is a tool for this purpose which does job in minutes however!! you can improvise if you have an old socket and hacksaw ? you can look at piston and see there are two slots on it? if you cut away an old socket so left with prongs to fit these slots then fit t bar and short extension to socket then you can push and turn piston back make sure slots are in line as to able fitting of new pads one has notch on rear face to insert in piston slot this also works for other models with rear calipers ? cheaper than the tool at £40 to £60 inthe uk dependant on makers hope this helps/inspires you ?

Mazda rear brake pad replacement

I had the same issue when I replaced mine. I can't say it is the 100% correct solution but it did work for me. Or course there is a specialty tool for the job, but I used a needle nose pliers and got in the two dimples on the piston face. You have to then push quite hard and screw it in clockwise. One of them I had to back out and in but it did work in the end. The fact they are so hard to do is probably related to the how soon my rear brakes went out (about 40K miles). Hopefully you got it, otherwise good luck. I just had to keep messing with it and it eventually came in. Also, I think if you fully extended the piston and wore the pads to metal that may also play a role in the difficulty getting the piston re-set. Once you get it going, it will pull right in as you turn it clockwise.
