You'll need a new lock cylinder, starter switch module, and either a replacement steering column wiring harness or a box full of crimp connectors to patch the wiring back together. Before you patch the wiring, make sure it will still fit in steering column when you're done; it's usually a rather tight fit to begin with. Your best source would be a salvage yard. Check car-parts.com to see who has these parts available (the lock cylinder will either have to be rekeyed by a locksmith to fit your existing key, or you'll need to get keys with it).
check ign fuse in engine compartment, if blown take the distributor cap off and cut the wire that runs to that capacitor( small silver cylinder}, tape the wires off and put it back together replace fuse and see if it starts.
They probably cut wires under the dashboard that lead from the key mechanism that run down your steering shaft under the plastic cover if that is were the lock is mounted ? so have you had a good look under the dash to see if any wires are cut ? if you look under there and see wires that have been cut you can just join them back together by following the colour of each wire and joining them together , if the steering lock was smashed or damaged this might prevent it from starting as well .
That wire carries the current to charge the battery. If it breaks, the battery voltage will drop and the car will not run correctly, if at all. It may start and run for a few seconds then cut off.
your car was build with an anti-theft devise from GM, inside the ignition key is a micro-chip, when you insert the key in the ignition cylinder, the sensor inside the cylinder will measure the resistance of that micro-chip inside the key, if there is a match the engine will start, if no match the computer will think someone is trying to steal your car & shut it off. try using another ignition key (spare key) if this doesn't work most likely the tiny wire inside the ignition cylinder is broken therefore the ignition cylinder will need to be replaced.
Get new key cut at dealer then insert into ign, Use object to tap strait in several times then jiggle key and rock steering wheel at same time.if this does not work will rquire new cylinder and housing.
Most likely the ignition switch is failing. The ignition switch has the sensor for the security system and when its cold it disrupts the contacts and causes the wrong "code" to be sent to satisfy the security system and allow the car to start. The switch itself is cheap, installing it can be tricky, but could be done by someone with a little effort.
