Generally it means some exhaust gasses are flowing through the catalytic converter in the exhaust system untreated/unconverted.This is caused usually by a crack in the converter.Replacement is the only fix.

more than likely...you'll have to pay for a new catalytic converter, O2 sensor(s), and labor...not just to replace these, but, in order to make sure these are the problems...a good mechanic will ask for "diagnosis" time...it's common, and very much necessary, in the newer vehicles that we drive these days...ask some of your friends, if they have a mechanic they trust...if they're good friends, they won't send you to a bad Mechanic...good luck...

Well it depends on what the actual problem is.
Code 420 means the catalytic converter is not working as well as it should be.
The computer uses data from the front and rear O2 sensor to gauge the operation of the cat.
The problem could be the cat, or something else in the exhaust system, or one of the sensors.
A mechanic would check the temp of the cat and watch the data flow coming from the sensors with a scan tool.
