I would have to guess it's the motor mount, I have a focus & the motor mount on the passenger side in the front of the motor, have someone watch under the hood, put at in first & keep your foot on the brake &let the clutch out slightly to see if the motor lifts up .

Sounds like a worn gear linkage, If its the 2nd and reverse other than that its the Synchro inside the gearbox, either way sounds like a gearbox off and back on.

You can determine the above if you got it looked over by a mechanic thou to be honest theres not much an answer but a rough idea.

SOURCE: 2001 Ford Focus shift button stuck in park

it's under a dime size cover on your console near the shifter. But, your brake/shift interlock solenoid is not working. either a fuse or the solenoid is bad. see owner manual for lcoation of over ride.

2002 Ford Focus SVT. Diagnose, while driving, a clunk, then vibration, attempting from 1st to 2nd shift, none occurred. Won't shift even to neutral. What things could be? Manual 6 speed transmission.

If you cannot change the gears when the engine is not running, then you probably have an internal transmission problem. Could be input shaft or cluster gear assembly

A carrier bearing usually pertains to the differential assembly and would not cause the symptom you describe. There is a problem with this transmission that causes it to not drop completely to first gear after a period of driving. Ford is aware of it but I do not believe they have initiated a recall. Call your Ford dealer(s) to see if you can find an honest man. Ask for the service manager.

go to the vw dealer and tell the service advisor you want them to "reset basic settings on my transmission". i used to be a tech at a vw dealer and this fixes about 90% of all transmission shifting issues. they will charge you iether .5 or 1.0 hrs labor for this although it only takes about 5 minutes.

It could be lash in the differential which is normal, but it could also be a loose u-joint in the driveshaft. Check the rear driveshaft u-joints.
