On older vehicles... loosen main distributor cap.. twist it left or right depending. Then retighten it. Make sure all spark plugs and air and fuel issues are addressed. P.s. be very careful. A shock from a running vehicle can seriously hurt you!!
That's just an Old..temp..field trick.. to cheaply get you by. Otherwise. On newer vehicles it should be controlled by the computer. Get a 60$ obd2 reader/scanner and check it by plugging the scanner in under the dash..in most cases it is located on drivers side between trunk releases and center console areas.
