2000 olds alero overheating just minutes after start-up. I'm told its the intake gasket but it doesn't make sense. I would believe head gasket but not intake.

Sorry, should have been more specific. Recently bought it cheap (first red flag). Has brand new water pump and thermostat per previous owner. First thing in the morning, can fill up coolant when engine is cold. 5 miles down the road temp is up and coolant shooting out pressure release hose from coolant tank (no access to radiator, can only fill coolant from reservoir). I would suspect head gasket but am told by several sources its my intake gasket. Is there something special about this model that I need to know? Other than it needs to be driven off a cliff.

If there is no coolant in the vehicle it will overheat quickly also. it you added coolant its possible the thermostat is not opening causing an overheat. worst case scenerio the head gasket is the problem

i would fill up the radiator and run engine in park with the resouvir cap off. let the thermo open it may show signs of overheat but watch the temp guage. if it gets too hot shut down, but if not let the engine run letting all the air pockets get out. it may spew some anti freeze but will stop when thermo opens.

what kind of engine is it the 3.1 or 2.2L motor.

3.1L motor is known for intake problems leaking external or internal.

Have you replaced the intake manifold gaskets? These engines have a history of leaking intake manifold gaskets. Water leaks into the intake and is burned off in the cylinders. If the engine overheats enough times, you will eventually blow the head gaskets.

Start by performing a compression check to make sure you haven't blown the head gaskets. Then make sure the car is really overheating (i.e. check the temperature of the engine with a infrared thermometer (they are cheap at Harbor Freight).

If it is really overheating, and you've really changed everything else, you need to change the intake manifold gaskets. Be sure to get the improved gaskets from the parts store (they have a metal core with rubber coating).

does it have the 3400 engine? check the oil to see if it has coolant mixing with it, they are known for bad intake manifold and head gaskets.

Overheating coolant boiling out into reserve tank

you have a blown head gasket.. doesn't have to have coolant in the oil for a blown head gasket... if hoses are rock hard when running then you have exhaust leaking into the coolant via a blown head gasket...

Thermostat bad?

in order to replace the thermostat u either have to remove the exhaust pipe on the left side of the engine (driver) or the lower intake but them engines are known for then lower intake gasket leaking and if you are loseing coolant then i would look in to haveing the intake gasket checked

My 1999 alero is overheating and engine coolant is leaking

hi, i dont know about the dipstick, but your overheating problem is most likely to be the thermostat...sounds like its stuck in the closed position, not allowing colder water to circulate, hence the overheating.......needs changing
