Ford were among the first to use a smart charging system - charge rate switched off during acceleration by the management system via a controller that also controls the battery light - perhaps it has developed a fault if your car is fitted with the system.

No its not that .Its likely a bad connecting under the dashboard . 175 amp fuses have nothing to do with that little light that draws ,0001 amp mess around with the wiring under the dash if you touch the right one it will go out

Check the connector that plugs into the alternator for broken wires. I have run across this issue more than once recently. Sometimes wires look good, but can be broken or oxidized under the plastic insulation.

SOURCE: 1998 Ford Contour Light on and mega-fuse

well if the ohm's are showing OK, then you may actually have a more serious problem, it is never good that the voltage light is on or stays on.

my suggestion is to take it up to autozone and tell them you want a trouble code done.

This is free and it will tell you exactly what is wrong....

Replace drive belt

Are you talking about the cam drive belt or the accessory drive serpentine belt? What engine, the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder, or the 2.5 liter V6? If it's the serpentine belt, does it have air conditioning?

Check your voltage at the alternator it should be 13-14.5 volts at idle. Also check the serpentine belt for cracks in the ribbing or the underside of belt.

I have a ford 1991 tempo,4 cylinder. There is a screeching coming from my car. When the screeching happends all the lights dim, and the air/heat blows out low, ones the screeching stop the lights go back...

The noise is most likely the drive belt. On that year and model, you have 3 different drive belts: one for the power steering, one for the alternator, and a serpentine belt for the rest of the accessories. Based upon your symptoms, the alternator belt would be suspect. But in this case, the alternator belt is a secondary belt powered off of the A/C pulley. So the culprit is most likely the serpentine belt. Cheapest solution is to replace the serpentine belt and see if that resolves the problem. If the problem persists, then the automatic belt tensioner for the serpentine belt is the next most likely culprit. This is a royal pain to replace and just the part can set you back in dollars. I've attached an exploded view of the right engine mount -- you will need to remove most of this in order to access the tensioner. Good luck with that!

Altenator

Unplug the alternator remove ground to motor.
Remove serpentine belt.
remove 2 bolts which hold alternator.
replace reverse of removal.
4 out of 10 difficulty.
Only special tool you will need is a wrench long enough to pull back the tensioner.
See the radiator support for location of tensioner and serpentine routing.
While its off, i would suggest replacing the belt too.

98 Ford Contour not charging

I dont know if yours is a 4 or 6 cyl. On the back of the motor by the firewall there is a 175 amp mega fuse inline on the positive cable comming from the battery. On the 4 cyl it is below the air box center of the back of the motor. On the 6 cyl, it is below the coil pack on the center back of the motor. Be sure to disconnect the negitave battery cable before you attempt this. There is a 3 inch long cover you pop off and you will see it. It takes a 10mm socket to unbolt it. Remove the fuse and ohm it out, if there is no continuity, you have a bad fuse, replace it. I have had 3 people replace their bats and alts ($350 in parts) just to find out it still had the problem. An $8 fuse. Good luck and hope this helps..
