If it has become really hard to steer, that could be the problem. You will probably need to replace the power steering pump. However, if it has slowy become harder and harder to turn, (especially if it has/had a whining noise) then there is a good chance it is just low on fluid. Check your resevoir. They are USUALLY found closer to the driver's side, under the hood.
First you will need a pulley remover/installer. Remove the power steering belt, remove bolts holding the pump, remove p/s lines, replace in reverse order,and fill pump. Start car and move steering wheel back and forth slightly, then turn the wheel all the way stop to stop Always watch that there is plenty of fluid in the reservoir. Check with dip stick, should be full to bottom mark;
you will most probably find that the seals in the power steering unit are faulty, clean the power steering lines etc and check to see where the leak actually is, it should be obvious if you are using that amount of fluid.
If it is just the line have a new one made at a hydraulic hose supply shop as it will most probably be cheaper than buying it original.
with a 3.1 liter , remove and install directions are remove serpentine belt , remove power steering pump assembly , then remove sensor harness , sensor bolt , remove sensor , so it sounds like behind the power steering pump assembly area if that makes sense . it has to be real close the the cam gear , you should be able to find it .
