SOURCE: column apart need to see

Please specify your car type & MY !

Example:
1992 Chevy Lumina 3.1 Liter Tilt Steering Wheel Disassembly

This procedure describes the disassembly of the steering wheel (Tilt) for a 1992 Chevy Lumina sedan. The purpose of this disassembly was to replace the RAKE. The rake moves the ignition switch mechanism when the key is turned. This system entails four major parts:

  • Key Lock Assembly
  • Rake
  • Rake to Ignition Switch actuator linkage rod
  • Ignition Switch assembly

While this procedure describes the disassembly of the tilt steering wheel for a 1992 Chevy Lumina sedan specifically, most all GM tilt wheels are the same so this procedure will work on almost all GM products. Remember that these are general instructions. For more detailed instructions pertaining to your specific vehicle, consult the appropriate repair manual

As always, you should be very careful when removing the air bag module if your vehicle is equipped with one.

WARNING: The Diagnostic Energy Reserve Module or Sensing and Diagnostic Module (DERM/SDM) can maintain enough voltage to cause air bag deployment for up to two minutes after the ignition switch is turned off and the battery is disconnected. Servicing the SRS system during this period may result in accidental deployment and personal injury.

  1. Disarm system as described in Air Bag System Disarming & Arming.
  2. Remove module attaching bolts from rear of steering wheel.
  3. Rotate horn lead ¼ turn and disconnect.
  4. Disconnect inflator module electrical connector, then remove module from steering wheel.
  5. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
    • After completing installation, rearm system as described in Air Bag System Disarming & Arming.
    • Turn ignition switch to ON position and verify that the Air Bag or SRS warning lamp flashes seven to nine times and then turns off.

Disabling the SIR System:

  1. Ensure front wheels are pointed straight ahead.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position and remove key.
  3. Remove AIR BAG fuse (No. 21 on 1995-96 models) from instrument panel fuse block.
  4. Remove trim panel from under steering column.
  5. Disconnect Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and yellow 2-way connector at base of steering column.
  6. Open glove compartment door and disconnect passenger side Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and yellow 2-way connector.
  7. Wait at least 2 minutes before proceeding with diagnosis or service.

Enabling the SIR System:

  1. Turn ignition key to the LOCK position and remove key.
  2. Open glove compartment door and connect yellow 2-way connector and Connector Position Assurance (CPA).
  3. Connect yellow 2-way connector at base of steering column, then install Connector Position Assurance (CPA).
  4. Install trim panel under steering column.
  5. Install AIR BAG fuse (1995-96 fuse 21) into instrument panel fuse block.
  6. Turn ignition key to the RUN position and verify that the AIR BAG/INFLATABLE RESTRAINT warning lamp flashes seven times and then turns off.

Okay, let's get to work! First we need to remove the steering wheel.

Note: Information provide here is by an average "back yard mechanic" with minimal professional training. So any information is taken at your own risk. But maybe this will help.

If you look in this area, Figure 9, there is a "V" cut out. Use a thin flat blade screwdriver. Insert about 2" and lightly pry down (handle of screwdriver up). This will release the safety tab and allow the column housing cover to be removed.

Pay attention to the upper right hand screw mounting hole. This might catch while trying to remove the column housing cover. Lift off the column housing cover from the Right.

While the column housing cover is free, the turn signal handle can be feed through it's cut out in the Housing by rotating the column housing cover 180 degrees to allow the washer tab on the handle to fit through.
