Must have make and model of the truck along with brand and model of the transmission. They are usually screwed into the transmission case low enough to be covered with oil all of the time.

The transmission temperature sensor is mounted on the overdrive/torque converter clutch solenoid assembly and provides input to the TCM. When the temperature sensor reports 30 degrees F or colder, there will be no overdrive, and below 50 degrees F, there will be no torque converter clutch. If the transmission fluid temperature sensor reports an overheating condition (over 260 degrees F) and the transmission is currently in overdrive, the TCM will downshift to third gear. The TCM will also light the LED in the dash-mounted OD off switch until the temperature drops below 230 degrees F. However, the torque converter clutch may still be operational.

It is located on the transmission side that faces the front of the car. It's just left and below the transmission spin on filter. It's the same sensor for the Engine Coolant Temp sensor and the Intake Air Temp sensor.
See 3rd dot point. It sounds like transmission fluid is getting hot and triggering the warning light. Check fluid level. Check trans cooler and cooler lines to be sure trans fluid is flowing through cooler to transmission.
Transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor
The TFT sensor is located on the internal wiring harness to the solenoid valves in the fluid pan.
It is a resistor and measures the transmission fluid temperature.
The transmission fluid temperature is used by the PCM for the following functions:
Applying the torque converter clutch is not permitted until the transmission fluid reaches a certain temperature,
engagement of 4th gear is prevented in extreme sub-zero temperatures until the normal operating temperature is reached,
if the transmission fluid temperature is excessive, a pre-set fixed shift curve is selected and the torque converter lock-up clutch is closed in "2", "3" and "4"; of the transmission warning indicator is activated. No substitute signal is available for the TFT sensor.
These are located in the cylinder head in the back of the head...meaning 180 degrees from the belts and pulleys(front) or the side the transmission is on. Two sensors exist...the single wire sensor is for the dash gauge. Saturn pn# 21025106 is the one you need
Ok, you have three sensors on this engine that work together to manage the temperature reading that are sent to the gauge. i recommend checking all three to be safe. i will list the sensors and, locations below.
1. Coolant temperature sensor- Under hood, driver side, upper engine area, above
transmission bell housing, mounted in driver side
end of intake manifold.
2. Engine Temperature sensor- Under hood, driver side, upper engine area, mounted
on rear cylinder head
3. Temperature switch.- Under hood, center, lower engine area, above oil
filter, rear of coolant temperature sensor, mounted
in engine block
