Fez, change transmission fluid and filter and hope for the best, damage may have already been done internally of transmission may require rebuilding.
Original owner let it run low on fluid because of leak. ... The worn bores will cause slipping, hard shifts, and high revs between shifts from those gears. ..... Andy I bought a 02 mercury mountaineer v6 4.0 the the O/D flashes and service light is on ... Get on a flat surface at highway speeds and manually turn the OD of and on.
The flashing light means there is a system problem with the automatic transmission. You will probably notice a lack of power when starting from a stop with this lamp flashing. The dealer or local mechanic should be able to scan for a fault code.
You need to have the transmission scanned for fault codes, the light blblinks only when the transmission control module detects a fault, in this model it is usually the result of the computer seeing excessive slippage, you may not fell it but sooner or later it may fail completely. Before deciding whether the ****** is defective have the system scanned by a ****** repair shop for the blinking light.
When was last time trans fluid & filter were changed? Should be done every 30k or 3years - sooner of you do any towing. Have it flushed also when doing the filter change.
It usually means the solenoid in the transmission is either bad, or sticking. Try putting in in drive and revving it a few times to see if it gets unstuck. Go down the road at about 20 mph and gas it once or twice.
It's possible the light bulb has a bad filament or connection. If the transmission doesn't seem to be shifting in and out of overdrive while you're driving then chances are its the bulb or connection.
The OD light is flashing to alert u to the fact that some kind of fault has occured in the transmission, the problem is in many cases a slipping condition, you need to have the trans control system tested for the trouble codes that are stored when this light flashes, this will let u know what the problem is and a direction to follow to repair it.
