SOURCE: find and replace speed sensor

Hi,

On Top of the Transmission. You can see the Black sensor just under the Air Breather Intake assembly in front of the driver side. It has an electrical wire connection and is bolted onto the tranny with (2)5/16" hex head bolts and (1)1/2" nut that holds the throttle arm to the sensor. Very easy to replace.

Thanks.

SOURCE: I need to find and replace the speed sensor

your transmission oil pan is at the bottom of the trans, the heat shield you are looking to remove is on the right side of the vehicle above where the axle goes into the trans unit. You should find the sensor mounted there with one bolt and one wire plug, hope this is helpful, let me know

SOURCE: illustrated diagram on how to remove speed sensor for windstar 98

The Vehicle Speed Sensor is located on transaxle, at the rear of the engine. I would check the harness connector to be sure it is clean and connected tightly. Also check the wiring for cuts and chaffing. Since it is fairly inexpensive, only about $42.00 from Ford, you may want to consider replacing it, at least to eliminate it as a possibility. You may want to go to a muffler shop to have this done like speedy, I believe the flex pipe needs to be undone to get to the VVS. If there is an Auto Zone around your area, you could always ask them for the step by step instructions to replacing the VVS, and it's free of charge. Good luck and hope this helps.

What cause the O/d light blink

it's usually because you have a bad VSS, Vehicle Speed Sesnor. It sends a signal from the trans to the speedo and engine computer. Usually speedo stops working too.

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731) is a magnetic pickup that sends a signal to the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) . This VSS signal transmits vehicle speed to the powertrain control module .

98 windstar, can't pass emissions

Wow, sounds like your mechanic screwed up. Ran rougher after the tune up is a bad sign. Also, you don't just replace sensors without finding out why they fail. For instance, and EGR code could be a sensor, or it could be the control solenoid, or it could be the EGR valve. Which was it, and what did the mechanic do to determine which it was? I'm willing to bet he threw a part at it based on a code instead of using the code as a starting point to correctly diagnosing the problem. Good luck with that guy. Switch mechanics to a dealer. I know from experience at a Ford dealer for 10 years, that replacing the rear plugs on that car is a pain in the **** and can easily be screwed up.

Van drops into 1st gear after 15 miles

What does the speedometer do when this happens? If it goes dead at the same time you need a Vehicle Speed Sensor which is mounted to the transmission. It tells the ECM what your speed is and without the input from the sensor, the computer assumes the van isn't going very fast and locks in 1st gear.
