1995 ford windstar thermostat housing bolt torque spec

Most people don't bother using a torque wrench to tighten a thermostat housing.

It is more important to be careful and tighten each bolt a little at a time. You do not want to warp, crack, miss align the part you are bolting.

It does not take a lot of torque to seal a thermostat housing. I would guess somewhere between 15 and 20 ft lbs.

It is often hard to find such torque specs for specific vehicles.

For bolts that you cannot find a specified torque spec, you can refer to a standard bolt torque chart. The charts are based on the diameter of the bolt threads not the wrench size used to fit the bolt head. The charts also depend on the hardness of the bolt material. Also keep in mind the material you are bolting into.

Here is one such chart...

Keep in mind that thermostat housing bolts are just sealing a gasket. They are not holding the entire car together.

After turning wrenches for many years, most mechanics just know by feel.

There are cases where a torque wrench is mandatory. Like head bolts, wheel bearing/hub nuts, rod caps, main bearing, etc.

Peugeot 206 thermostat housing torque settings

@Kenneth Ella: In my Peugeot 206 1.4 (TU engine series), tightening the thermostat housing bolts with a torque 20 nm was the breaking of the thread in the engine head. I think, correct torque is about 10 nm (8-12 nm).

2003 zx2 thermostat housing seal

Be sure the surface is nice and clean. Don't over tighten your screws. There is a torque spec for that particular set up, so you need to find out what the torque spec is and don't go past that. Next make sure you don't use any kind of silicone or form a gasket. Just use the O-ring on clean surfaces.

What is torque spec for 2004 Ford 4.0 thermostat cover bolts? Replaced black ''plastic'' thermostat housing and inlet cover. Thanks

Normally these bolts are about 20-24ft lbs. You don't want to over tighten them as they should have a rubber washer/gasket to help provide a good seal. These cast aluminum housing will easily strip so just use care when tightening. Just snug both bolts and run the vehicle til it reaches operating temp then check for leaks. You can also purchase a Chiltons/Haynes manual for your vehicle at any auto parts store for $15 they normally give you the torque specs as well as some other valuable tipe
