Kinda hard to post a hand drawing, but basically the wire to the the distributor comes from the coil terminal that has only one wire (unless it also has a noise suppression capacitor. The other side of the coil has two wires, one goes to the ignition switch "on", and the other wire goes to the starter "start" terminal. This is done so that full 12 volts go to the coil when cranking (so that the spark to the plugs is higher voltage and jumps the plug gap better for starting, and because the wire going to the ignition switch has a resistance section that reduces the voltage and we know from ohms law that when the voltage is reduced, the amperage increases, thus causing a fatter spark to assist in fuel mileage and cleaner burn. I bet you can do a search for basic car ignition circuit in 1970.

SOURCE: need wireing diagram to change 72 nova over to hei distributor

Hey , just take the positive wire from the coil you are removing and feed it to the + terminal on the HEI dist. cap.the other terminal under there is for your tachometer. If you are mounting a master kill switch in the bumper for drag racing- attatch the kill wire to the tach terminal also.
Thats it you just plug the three wire pigtail from the dist. base(pickup) to the cap and you are off.
Remember firing order is 18436572 in a clockwise direction. to find #1 remove #1 plug and have someone"bump" the engine over while holding your finger over the hole-carefull. then line up the slotted mark on the crank pulley with the big notch on the timing indicator. Good luck

I keep asking the same question for a 1971 dodge 318-1 v8 engine and get every year but what im asking

The firing order for a Dodge 318cid/5.2L is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 clockwise rotation.
Cylinders are numbered like this.
Pass side 2-4-6-8 front to rear.
Driver side 1-3-5-7 front to rear.
The firing order is probably forged into the intake manifold. Number one tower on the distributor cap is the one facing the number one plug or the driver-side headlight.
Distributor rotor at Number 1 plug terminal points to front intake bolt on left side of engine.

I need the firing order for a 1971 buick skylark

Here is the firing order for that vehicle and engine, that is if it does have a Buick engine with the distributor mounted on the front of the engine, but if the distributor is mounted on the back of the engine then it is an Oldsmobile engine and I have that firing order diagram also if you require it.

1971 cadilac distributor cap wiring diagram. All that we need to know is the order

You will have to get number one up,the piston on number one cylinder, then remove the cap to see where the rotor is pointing, then start your number one plug wire there, make sure you go around the distributor the same way the rotor button turns, and the firing oder is 1563427,if it back fires, then you are 180 degrees out, remove the wires, and start them directly across from where you had number one, then it will start.
