SOURCE: Check engine light reports VSS problem

A specific trouble code,no matter what the code is,always has a diagnostic route that is available at pay sources like All Data online. It always involves checking the wires involved in the specific circuit, for continuity, along with testing the individual components, like the vehicle speed sensor.Remove the VSS from the trans, and reinspect the drive, and driven gear. The drive gear is attached to the differential down in the trans, and you have to actually look down in the hole, and verify the drive gear is ok and intact. Then look very carefully at the plastic gear that is attached to the VSS,and make sure the middle of it isnt "applecored" as this will cause the VSS to NOT turn or give a signal. Now,reinstall the VSS,and turn the differential. This requires two helpers, one on each side of the car,to turn both tires at the same time,in the same direction (this turns the differential) while you are checking the two wires coming out of the VSS,for an alterenating current flow, that would be sent to the PCM(ECU).Verify VSS operation. If the VSS is producing a signal for the PCM,then the only thing left is the PCM itself,or the wires between the VSS,and PCM(ECU).That goes back to what i was saying about checking the wires' continuity between the sensor and PCM.Make certain the wires involved in the VSS circuit have continuity, and good tight connections at both ends.Good luck.

I WOULD TRY DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY FOR 5 MINUTES TO SEE IF THE COMPUTER WILL REVERT TO IT'S DEFAULT SETTINGS. IF YOU HAVE A CODE FOR THE RADIO, THEN RETRIEVE IT BEFORE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. HOPE THIS HELPS. THANK YOU FOR USING FIX-YA. BEST OF LUCK. AND THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR AN HONEST RATING.

SOURCE: vss vehicle speed sensor

Access is easiest from below. on the manual transmission you will have to jack up and support the car, remove the left front wheel and wheel arch liner. the sensor is located next to the right hand drive shaft at the rear of the transmission. disconnect the wiring plug from the top of sensor, pull out retaining pin, noting how it is fitted, pull sensor out and recover O-ring seal if damaged replace with new. watch out for a little oil spillage . fitting is reversal of removal

I have a 1999 suzuki grand vitara 2.0 5 speed what speed sensor do I need and what colour

easter egg hunt 1million
Car speed?
or ABS speed sensors. we cant guess, whats wrong, can we.?
USA car,? we are USA, cars not here are vastly different.
so........????????
why ask not telling problem? scans told you sensor is bad
post the DTC error. speedo dead.Odom, dead? what?
J20 engine ,
5 speed stick shift box. manual trans,,m/t
4wd or 2wd?
toss coin NOT ABS sensors.
there are 2 speed sensors ill do all 3 permutations of car
4wd one or tail of transfer case
2wd one on tail of 5speed box.
any, the backup speed sensor in the speedometer cluster
89-98 years and was deleted 1999, usa.

why ask ,tell why. so we can be on the same page and
not have to document all the above.

color is of on concern, only correct part numbers matter !!!

colour (non usa spelling) is my only real useful HINT.
never said speedometer fails. or odometer fails
the trans is manual so no speed sensor needed ever there to shift automatially, its a stick

scan it yet.?
THAT BE FIRST.

i looked at our 1999 usa GV . serv. man
best i can tell speedo has new electronic head.
no speedo cable. first year, in fact. (i owned a 97 and 04)

so when VSS goes dead (say)
the speedo goes dead
odom goes dead
and ECU sets DTC errors for VSS dead.
3 clear symptoms.
some cars have different VSS1 to match, axle gears.
the vss gear on end .

on newer cars with stick shift
like mine now
the aBS sends speed to PCM
so there is no transmission speeds sensors at all , 6sp, m/t
so lacking symptoms, me bollixed.

Speedometer quits working and D4 light flashes on 1995 Honda Odyssey. The...

Speedometer quits working and D4 light flashes on 1995 Honda Odyssey. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is bad. You will need a replacement ($39 online) sensor, Ratchet with extra long extension, 10 mm socket w/ swivel, a long flexible wand with a magnet on the end, and a flashlight. Unplug the wire from the old VSS. Remove the two mounting bolts. Lift out the old VSS and the drive key. Put a small amount of grease on the new drive key and insert it into the new VSS. Plug the wire into the new VSS and use the wire to lower the VSS into place aligning it with the two mounting holes. Use the magnet wand to lower the bolts into the holes and turn to just get the bolts started. VSS IS FLUSH WITH THE TRANSMISSION BEFORE TIGHTENING THE BOLTS. You are now finished. You can access the VSS from the top of the engine in your garage/driveway. It is located on the top/backside of the transmission, just below the air cleaner hose. Best done in the morning when the engine is cold unless you like getting burns on your forearms. Good luck!

Where is theTransmission Speed Sensor location on 1995 escort lx wagon?

Some of the trannys do not have the fill plug feature. On these trannys, you have to fill through the Vehicle Speed Sensor location (VSS). This is not fun. The VSS is located on the firewall side of the tranny, about in the middle of the tranny, down low. You can barely see it and reach it from the top of the engine compartment on the driver\'s side. You have to disconnect the VSS wire connector. Then, remove the VSS retaining bolt - this is a 10mm hex-head bolt in the tranny near the base of the VSS. The VSS must finally be pried carefully out of the case. Tranny fluid is filled through the VSS hole until full. Re-install the VSS and hook up the connector when complete. Have a box of Band-Aids ready.

If you have to change the fluid because you pulled the tranny, do yourself the favor of removing the speed sensor when the tranny is OUT of the vehicle. Then you can change the O-ring as well. Much easier not to damage the VSS which is a $60+ part to replace.

1994 GRAND MARQUIS Odometer stopped working, tridometer aswell

If the odometer and tripmeter stop incrementing their mile values, then the VSS or vehicle speed sensor is bad or has become disconnected.

Vehicle Speed Sensor OPERATION The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is a magnetic pick-up sensor that sends a signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the speedometer. The sensor measures the rotation of the transmission output shaft or the ring gear on the differential and sends an AC voltage signal to the PCM which determines the corresponding vehicle speed.
TESTING
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disengage the wiring harness connector from the VSS.
  3. Using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM), measure the resistance (ohmmeter function) between the sensor terminals. If the resistance is 190-250 ohms, the sensor is okay.

TESTING
