To clarify, the compressor and fan will run in defrost mode. The compressor and fan runs to dry out the air blowing onto the windshield.
Now if the condenser fan runs in "heat" you may have a problem with the fan relay or the main controller.
Check your blower motor resistor connection.Turn switch and fan on then wiggle the resistor pigtail fan should turn on if not replace resistor.These get to hot and usally melt the pigtail and loose their connection.
If even after the engine heats up the fan does not work then you must check the following.
1. the thermostat to the fan must be checked.
2. the fuse to the fan motor must be checked, check fan seperately, check the relay unit.
3. Check the wiring to the fan circuit.
It might and it might not matter. It depends on EXACTLY which car you are getting the fan out of. Some may interchange and some won't. Then you have the problem of not knowing if the fan that you "pick" is even any good. It could be all rusty inside the motor from being out in the weather. Most of the cars at the salvage yards do not have any hoods to protect electrical devices from the weather.

Blower Motor Control Processor
The blower motor control processor is an interface between the HVAC control module and the blower motor. The blower motor speed control, battery positive voltage and ground circuits enable the control processor to operate. The HVAC control module provides a PWM signal to the control processor in order to command the blower motor speed. The processor supplies 12 volts to the blower motor through the blower motor voltage supply circuit. The control processor uses the blower motor ground as a low side control to adjust the blower motor speed.
