My car is overheating and I dont know why, we changed the thermostat, it has a new water pump and timing belt, all new hoses. I just got it out of the shop and still it overheats, it was pushing all the coolant back out of the radiator into the reservior and spitting it everywhere, well they fixed that at the shop but it still overheats, I just got it back 3 days ago and I drove it on the highway and all around town yesterday but I get in it today to go somewhere and I get about 1/2 mile from my house and it started to overheat, I just dont get it, it doesnt leak at all anymore so what is the problem, the mechanic now says it could be a faulty thermostat, but he did 1800$ worth of work and now he decides to tell me about a 15$ thermostat, I feel like he is screwing me and my aunt(who is paying for it up front, by the way it is her mechanic). Does anyone know what the problem can be?
Well if it were blowing antifreeze out into the jug you probably had a cracked head. When you pull the cap off does any water try to come out when you start it now? Yes it could still be a thermostat causing problems now but he probably should have changed it when he was changing the water pump. Did he replace either one of the heads or just a head gasket?
It can also blow air back into the radiator with a cracked head blowing the water out of your radiator. And yes if it were overheating the first thing you would do is change the thermostat. Well the thermostat is the next step. How hot is the car getting?
Does it smell hot or how do you know it is really hot? The other thing it could be is a plugged up radiator which you could take out and have cleaned out. Does this car have electric cooling fans or manual cooling fan? Also you could take out your temperature sending unit (while the engine is cool) and install a manual temperature gauge and make sure it is in fact getting hot.

He didnt replace either head or head gasket he replaced the intake manifold gasket, I think he should have tried the thermostat before he did 1800$ worth of work to it, I thought a sign of a blown head gasket or cracked head was water in you oil, or "milky oil" I dont have water in my oil. I just want my car back. It doesn't leak or smoke or anything like that I have been having to use this gas guzzling pontiac turbo charged p.o.s and I want my baby back, thanks for the advice. By the way the mechanic said there is no way that there is a blown head gasket or cracked head so I dont get it.
The car only got in the RED once, any other time it tried to overheat I would never let it get that hot at all I would see the temp gauge start to spike and once it got like one to two lines away from the red I would turn the car off. What could be the other problems besides a cracked head?
Well before it went to the shop I could smell it getting hot, and I knew it was getting hot because I have a closed cooling system and when it gets hot the coolant goes into the reservior. But yesterday I couldnt smell anything and the coolant wasn't going into the reservior. Could my temp gauge on my dash be broken or something? They said the radiator wasn't plugged up they took it off and cleaned it out. It does have electric cooling fans a condensor fan and a radiator fan. The fans kick on like they are susposed to. I thought that maybe it was a relay switch but that mechanic said it wasn't. I will try switching out the temperature sending unit, with a manuual gauge and check that out. Thanks again.
